N.A. P-51D Mustang Revell H-47 1975
My first finished aircraft model build for a considerable time and my first model post here, an old kit of an even older mold that Revell just keeps on releasing . . . . STILL
First released in 1963 as kit H-619 "CY-G/44-14985 Millie P" 343rd FS, 55th FG, in the outrageously wrong bright red/silver and green stripes scheme that was iconic to modellers of a certain age. It is without doubt the worst shaped P-51D anywhere, the differences between this kit and the original issue are paddle bladed propeller blades, single piece canopy, drop tanks and somewhere to hang 'em. I have an original kit to do OOB.
Modellers have asked . . ."why???" would I even consider building this kit, well I needed something to practice new techniques on that failure would not be too big a problem if something did not work. It actually grew into a fight I just had to win. I'll provide a link to my build thread on the ATF so you can see my trials and tribulations https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/airfixt ... ml#p761082;
This kit was built 28Dec2016 - 19Nov2017. This is technically the third build of this kit I've done but the earlier two were of the original kit, red paint and all and no longer exist.
North American P-51D-5NA Sno. 4413571 WR-X "Texas Terror IV" of the 354th FS, 355th FG, Steeple Morden England, 1944 - 1945. As produced the kit represents the mount of Maj. L.G. Mendenhall who was rotated home to the US after completing his tour in this aircraft. Sno. 4413571 was lost along with it's new pilot a few months later when it ditched in the Channel after battle damage.

Congratulations - getting a result like that out of an early sixties kit is the mark of a proper modeller. Very nice.

Thankyou Spaceowl for the kind comment.
I like old kits as they challenge us to develop proper modelling skills, I'm not into shake and bake kits.

That is certainly a P-51 that looks as if it has seen plenty of action, Faaman and you've managed a decent result. I agree, it's a good piece on which to practice your painting and weathering but the shape is just not right and I'm not one who is usually too fussy about that sort of thing! I think it's time for Revell to put this old dog to sleep.

Why do they keep on re-issueing it? They got hold of the Matchbox tooling, which is far superior to their household tooling!ShaunW wrote: I think it's time for Revell to put this old dog to sleep.

Re: N.A. P-51D Mustang Revell H-47 1975
It's been released 13 times 1963 - 2013, slightly retooled for this H-47 boxing.
It's beyond belief that Revell do not put this tool in the museum where it belongs and start using the Matchbox P-51D/K tool.
I'm a glutton for punishment as I started an original 1963 H-619 kit, doing it as OOB as possible. Yes red and silver colour scheme also, it's too iconic to not do it right (wrong).

Well tidy build of an odd shaped Mustang, but well tidy nevertheless.
Re: N.A. P-51D Mustang Revell H-47 1975
That oldster cleaned up well. Still remember the red fuselage of the original issue.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale

Re: N.A. P-51D Mustang Revell H-47 1975
The "practising new techniques" seems to have worked exceptionally well - good job on the build and finish. But the underlying kit is definitely an interesting variation on a mustang shape. I'm glad I'm not the only person who loves ancient ill-shaped kits!
