Nieuport 17

Post by Softscience »

At long last. After 30+ years of modeling, and about half a dozen failed attempts, I have finally successfully built a biplane model!

This is Eduard's Nieuport 17 in 1/48 scale, built straight out of the box. Paints are Tamiya flat aluminum, various Vallejo for the details, and some nameless artist oils on the wood bits.

The clear wing cellules are Micro Crystal Clear PVA.

Rigging is Ezline.

There are plenty of rookie mistakes on here. I admit to having rushed to finish this. I just wanted to finally have a biplane in the collection, and having fun trumped getting things perfect.

I didn't add any turnbuckles, which I guess is kind of a no-no now, but they looked oversized when I tried to do them. I thought .3 mm tube would work, but it looked like the plane was wearing cow bells. :)

I'm also not sure about the blue rigging lines. I got that by reading something related to the WNW salmson, where they said the French lines were blue. They seem to know what they're doing, so why not?

Here are some admittedly mediocre pictures.

Very well done! Your Nieuport looks fabulous. The larger scale kits are somewhat easier than 1/72 kits, which are pretty difficult for most of us.

Bootiful! :-D
That's a cracking looking build and if that is your first biplane then those that follow are going to be spectacular indeed.

Top job!
Best wishes

Talk about a gorgeous Bebe! I like the look of those rigging wires which seem fine without turnbuckles and your work on the finish is magnificent!

That is a seriously good looking Nieuport, Ralph with a flawless finish and great rigging. Top marks from me for your first biplane!

You may say you rushed this, however, the model came out looking very professional. Well done!
This is an absolutely beautiful model; even the rigging doesn't look so over-scale to me, and the color looks fine.

Neither the photos or the model could be described as mediocre or even poor. The model is first class - no obvious errors at all. For a first attempt that is really very, very good indeed. The finish is first class - and difficult to achieve too. Looking forward to seeing more models with spare wings from your hangar.

BTW French rigging lines were blue in colour.

Thank you for the inspiration. By the end of 2018 I'm now going to build a biplane with rigging and I hope it turns out looking a tenth as good as your Scout. Well done, sir, nice piece of modelling. It might kick off the Gran Chaco war project I've been wanting to do all these years.

Looks great, Ralph - your building and painting skills are obviously useful on biplanes and now that you have learned rigging, your antennas on the more mundane unrigged models will be even better :)

Wow. I'm flattered. I think you'll find that with the right tools (a needle, Lycra thread, gel CA, and proper magnification), it's easier than you expected.

Gran Chaco War? Do tell.
