Macchi MC.202 Folgore, Royal Egyptian Air Force, 1949

Just in time to be my fourteenth and final build of 2017, this is the venerable Supermodel kit of the MC.202 which I purchased some years ago for $2 Cdn as it was missing the box and a bit of landing gear, which I replaced with gear from my earlier Supermodel MC.205 Veltro build. Markings were purloined from the DML Jian J-2, and radio aerials from trusty .10 gauge electric guitar string. Evergreen dowelling was drilled out and installed to represent the wing mounted cannon upgrade that many Folgores received to increase their punch. The a/c serial number inside the fuselage band is in fact the Arabic characters for 2017 that I pencilled in and is of course wholly fictitious, as my intent was not to depict an actual historical machine. Not my best job, but certainly not the worst. While most of King Farouk's Italian fighters were in fact either MC.205`s or MC.202s brought up to MC. 205 standard, this one is a bit of a mutant. It has the earlier Alfa Romeo built DB 601 instead of the larger and later DB 605 copy, and in any event actual hard info on these aircraft is rather patchy. Enjoy!

Hi GmG. I like seeing Italian stuff on here, and the Egyptian markings make it all the more interesting. Top stuff mate!

An excellent Folgore, GMG and I never knew the type had been used by Egypt so I've learned something new and many thanks for filling in that gap in my aviation education!

This is one of my favorites of yours yet! I especially like those rare Egyptian markings and the paint work is a real treat.

Most excellent!

Nice work GMG, I like the purposeful shape of the Macchi and keep meaning to do it in 'Good guy colours' someday

Oooh! Cool beans, man. And I heartily agree, the Macchis were a handsome bunch. I think that is a MC.205 Veltro in that artwork, though. I built the Supermodel Veltro a few years ago and it too is a lovely little kit. I have another and ought to have done it in REAF markings, and done this one as a postwar Italian Air Force machine, or that weird looking 202D with the big chin radiator. Ah well.

I remember those Supermodel kits from the very late 1960's or very early 1970's. They were good kits of then unusual subjects. Yours is even more interesting in those markings - and thanks for the background information. (So much to learn and this site teaches so much!) I really do like the base too - very convincing.
