Airfix 1/72 Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero

Post by Marc »

A shout-out to Airfix for this splendid little model. The kit went together easily with good cockpit and wheel well detail. The same can be said for the engine. I have seen some negative comments regarding the decals Airfix have been supplying lately. I had no problems with the decals in my kit. I was very happy with all the decals including the minute ones that go on the prop blades and the even smaller ones on the wings, tail plane and rudder. If I have to frown about something it would be the engraved panel lines that are a tad deep. But that is splitting hairs considering the price and overall build quality of the kit. Painting was a doodle. I airbrushed the model Tamiya Matt White with a few drops of Humbrol Khaki to give the off-white appearance. The cowling was hand painted with Tamiya dark sea blue. (It seems black in the photos but has a hint of dark blue on the actual model) I lightly weathered the model and then finished off with a wash of black pastel scrapings dissolved in water. The model was built OOB except for the masking tape seat belts. (Apologies for the quality of the seat photo. It was taken on the workbench with my cell phone camera.) Final verdict: A pleasure to build. Well done Airfix.

(The following from the www) Bearing two fuselage stripes and the unique ‘X’ prefixed serial at the top of its fin, this Model 21 was one of 21 Zeroes flown to Rabaul by the 3rd AG in September 1942.

Another superb result Marc and I must agree, Airfix produced a winner with this kit.

That model could be used by Airfix for their marketing! Beautifully finished and superbly weathered. Very many congratulations.

An excellent build, Marc. I've heard and read great things about this kit from Airfix.
