Airfix 1/72 Lysander conversion to a P.12 tandem
Re: Airfix 1/72 Lysander conversion to a P.12 tandem
The green doesn't look TOO bad, although I think it is a little brighter than it should be. However you could say the makers painted it in whatever they had at hand. There's a war on you know!!
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

Firstly, and with considerable admiration to our work; well done indeed!
Your green does look a bit metallurgically green. Frankly, to correct it, I would quickly mask the earth color with thin strips. Then give it a light once over with a darker green.
If you just leave it as is, I think it will bother you forever.

It looks OK to me, I think the flash makes it look brighter.

Hard to tell. The 2nd photo is useless because of the flash. In the first photo it almost looks a bit RAAF greenish.
You have cleverly just shown a hint of the paint bottles -- obviously Model Master or Testors, but which numbers and enamel or acryl ? Their RAF colors used to be pretty good. I wonder if a good flat coat might help ?

Not the prettiest of Lysanders that I've seen, but I have to commend very highly on you conversion work. You've done a great job.
Keep up the good work

Guys, I really appreciate your responses to my plea for help. 59North nailed it:
jRatz: Keen eye John. They are enamel (with the exception of the Earth Red). The green I used was Model Master enamel "Medium Green" (FS34102). Now that you mention it, it does look a good copy of the RAAF green you see. The yellow is Humbrol enamel, Prototype/Trainer Yellow - Matt 24.
I have to admit I wasn't keen on this project at all. I've never done a conversion or worked with vacuformed model parts before and, frankly, didn't want to start now. However, I needed to try it out, on a smaller scale, for a project down the road (a kit given to me by friend) which is much larger. I'm glad I did now. I will never seek out these kits with the same relish I do with injected-molded plastic kits, but they certainly aren't as intimidating or mysterious as they once were.
And it helped to get encouragement / assistance from the great people on this forum. Thanks!!
And it would. With the closing of my neighborhood hobby shop, I thought I would be dependent on mail-order paints so would have to shelve this project until new paint was obtained. But luck was with me this afternoon! I went with my wife to Hobby Lobby to see if they had anything close to RAF Dark Green. Being a major chain-store, I didn't have high hopes they would have what I needed. But that wasn't the case and they had a small selection of Model Master military enamel paints of which that was one. Woohoo! So I will repaint the green and go from there.59North wrote:If you just leave it as is, I think it will bother you forever.

This really is a great conversion project to follow, PW. Alas, though, I have dodgy colour vision so I'll leave the green debate to others who can tell it more reliably from the brown!

Like many British aircraft converted or meant for an unusual purpose it was functional rather than attractive.Miss-Stang wrote:Not the prettiest of Lysanders that I've seen, but I have to commend very highly on you conversion work. You've done a great job.

Re: Airfix 1/72 Lysander conversion to a P.12 tandem
Finally, this little project is done! After taking time-off for the Blitzbau, it was back to work on the conversion. I repainted the green which did wonders for it. Now that it is finished I have to say I am rather taken by it. It was an interesting build to say the least.
The roundels on the sides of the fuselage are a tad undersize and I am missing the two red/white/blue flash insignias on the inside of the vertical stabilizers. Lastly, I did not have the correct aircraft registration number so used two from the original Lysander model kit to fill the void. It's an interesting addition to my collection and is something I never thought I would have - let alone build.

A fantastic end. The model is so odd and unique that it becomes very attractive.
I'm glad for your own peace that you corrected the green. It looks awesome in its full splendour.

Holy Schmolies what a great piece of work. Well worth the struggle.

Looks a bit like a Dragonfly from the bottom. Nicely done!
