Vought F4U Corsair - Frog 1/72
As always, at this time of the year following my normal three month work enforced modelling break, I always like to get a model under my belt. What better to get the basic skills up and running than a nice, simple Frog kit.
The kit was originally released in the early 1970s and by modern standards is extremely basic. I think in total it has around 40 parts, and some of them are optional. Like all Frog kits, however, it goes together quite well. To keep the build simple and quick, I didn't add any extra detail or modern accessories. It's more or less straight out of the box. The only concession to modernity are the decals which are from an Xtradecal sheet. The original sheet had yellowed somewhat although it does look usable.
The original kit came with markings for two Royal New Zealand Air Force Corsairs. Even though I didn't use the kit decals, I chose this interesting RNZAF example which is included on the Xtradecal sheet. It's essentially a "cut & shut" job. You will see that the front half of the aeroplane is in a different colour scheme to the back half. This is because it is made up from the remains of two airframes which had been actually written off in accidents. However, there was sufficient left intact to assemble a new hybrid aeroplane from the bits. I don't think it would get approval today but the squadron was based at Gudalcanal at the time (end of 1944) so they more or less had to make do and mend as best they could.

Always great to see old FROG kits made so well. I wonder how long it will take before the supply runs out.

Excellent! Very nicely done indeed Eric
Best wishes

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

I reckon I have quite a few in the stash. I much prefer building original Frogs compared to their re-moulded descendants.

Gotta love a Frog kit, very nicely finished
Been modelling for years, still learning . . . .
Model kits are meant to be assembled . . . . . . . . . . eventually.

I did my best to try and preserve the fairly delicate raised panel lines. The fit was pretty good so filler and sanding was able to be kept to a minimum.

At least I got a couple of Frogs, before the prices started to rise considerably....Eric Mc wrote:Interesting point.vacant wrote:Always great to see old FROG kits made so well. I wonder how long it will take before the supply runs out.

(Some of the boxarts are very nice, my favourite: Amy Johnson´s green Gipsy Moth, flying over a lake, with people
waving their arms up to her ... )
...and: nice Corsair, by the way!
Waiting for the day, when wars for territory will be something to be read about in history books only.

That has come out great, a nice scheme too. Don't think I've seen that one before.

Those pld Frog kits were very good for their time: your model demonstrates this well. I really like the unusual colour scheme too.

Re: Vought F4U Corsair - Frog 1/72
Towards the end of the FROG era, they did issue some nice neat kits. They were definitely a bit basic but they were on a par with (say) Matchbox kits of the same period (1972 to 1976).

I love seeing these old Frog kits built and you have done a cracking job on this one Eric. I've always liked the Corsair (I nearly bought an RC kit of one, until I saw it fly, it was way too fast for my ageing reaction time, it would've been stuck in a tree in no time at all!)
Really nice job and interesting colours.
