Sabre Mk.6, No.1 Squadron South African Air Force 1970
HobbyCraft 1/72 Canadair CL-13B Sabre Mk.6.
The South African Air Force took delivery of 34 Canadair CL-13B Sabre Mk6 (serials 350-383) in August 1956. Described as the ultimate Sabre the Mk6 was powered by the Orenda 14 turbojet which could take it to within a whisker of the speed of sound. So it didn’t take long for Capt. Larry Eagar, flying a No.1 Squadron Sabre became the first pilot in South Africa to break the sound barrier.
The Sabre served in the Air Defence role with numbers 1 & 2 Squadrons (No.2 re-equiped with Mirage IIICZ in 1963) until 1975. All the remaining Sabres being handed over to 85 Advanced Flying School until finally retired in August 1979.
This was my entry in the Sabre group build. I have had a yearning to build one of these since I was about 9 years old when I first saw a picture of one. Hope you like it.
No markings were applied to the underside. References describe the underside as being 'Light Admiralty Grey' but from the photos I have it looks more like 'Light Aircraft Grey' so that's what I used.
The castle markings are a little over sized, I had an 'episode' with the smaller ones!
The pilot & cockpit tub turned out OK I think.
I deployed the wing slats to pose the Sabre in a tight turn, low down where it excelled.
Here is the reference photo:

Like it? I love it. Terrific colour scheme from one of my favourite air forces and modelled in flight (the way I like them)!
Thanks

Love it. My all-time favourite aircraft, and in an unusual scheme. Looks like you got the camo pattern spot on.

Re: Sabre Mk.6, No.1 Squadron South African Air Force 1970
Thanks Mike, glad you like it.
It may be hard to find but has lots of glossy colour pictures & great history.
I also have a copy of Scale Aircraft Modelling Vol3, No.3 which has a comprehensive article on the SAAF. Lots of B&W drawings and pictures as well as colour listings from the BS range. I could scan the article if you like.
Well worth a visit is the IPMS South Africa site: http://newsite.ipmssa.za.org/content/view/48/44/
What are you planning to build?
If you are planning a SAAF build I would recommend this book:Beowulf Shaeffer wrote:thanks .that will come in useful
