Spitfires found in my loft.

Post by splash »

When I gave up building kits 20 odd years ago, I must have had a craze for Spitfires, this is what I have just found in my loft.

Time to get the glue out.

That's a KP. Not bad, but distinctly old and clunky now. Actually, most of those are ok, with the exception of the Hobbycraft Seafire (air-rifle target). Even the Heller Mk 1 and V are ok, as long as you can live without gull wings, and other areas of accuracy. The Academy Mk XIV isn't too bad, IMHO, and the Heller XVI was once the best you could get in 1:72 of any Spitfire.

The Airfix 1:48 Mk Vs can hold their own. I've never seen a Hi Tech one in the flesh. I bet you'd be the only kid on your block with one of those!
Brews
you are spot on with your description of the kits, my favorite always was the Heller XVI as it was one of the first kits that came out with the tear drop canopy and as you say was at the time the best spitfire on the market.

The Airfix Hi Tech was a bit of a disappointment that was softened by the fact I only paid the same price as the normal Airfix 1/48 Mk V from a shop that was closing down, back in the early 90’s.

The Hi Tech kit as you say only adds white metal landing gear Prop Spinner and some PE and I agree they are no better then the original plastic parts that came with the kit.

I did find an Airfix P-51B Mustang (The Hun Hunter from Texas) in with the Spitfires but was to ashamed to tell people I had one :ha:

Good man!

This collection makes me want to dig out and build some of my old Spitfires. I think I have every one pictured but for the Heller Mk. I, and, of course, the Devil Scale Duo...

I can't blame you. All it takes is one to make all the others look bad. At least you admitted it. :ha: :ha: and that's half the battle
