This is the famous P38F flight by Col. Tondi from June to July 1943.
The Airfix kit is nice, and with a little bit of extra work it's possible to obtain a great model.

Sometimes the talent consists exactly in that: try five dozen times when others stop at three dozen...! (F.Labelle)
I think that modeling is a subtle mix of zen philosophy and absolute crazyness - but in my case I would not dare to specify the respective percentage of each......

This plane was captured on 12 june 1943, because it landed in error a Capoterra (Sardinia).
USAAF markings were replaced with italians then, after his arriving and some evalutation in Guidonia airport, near Rome, was use in action by Tenente Colonnello Angelo Tondi (sometime you find 'Rotondi' in books or in the web: is wrong). On 11 August 1943, Tondi shot down a B-17G ('Bonnie Sue', serial number 4230307) over Terni, it's sure, and damaged other three Flying Fortresses. Another B-17 fell in flames on 4 September over Capua ('The lady Evelyn', serial number 42-30344): americans told it was shot down by a P-38, but we haven't sure data about.
Then, 'cause poor compatibility with italian gasoline, this plane was left on ground and lost in the fog of war.

Looks very striking in that stark scheme.
