Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Va Wing Commander D. Bader - Finished
Hi folks,
Have got bogged down (paint and decals) with the Bristol Bulldog of Douglas Bader so have put it to one side.
I had already started this Spit so carried on and finished it.
It is a nice model but is a bit "fat" in places, especially around the tail fin and wings.
The rudder and the wing trailing edges are far too thick and are difficult to thin easily.
It is not as good as the recent Airfix Mk XII and Tamiya MK 1.
But I had to make it to find out.
Cheers,
Don

Good stuff. A little thing I have learned was the logo Lord Lloyd I on the starboard side fuselage. Never knew about that as normally we only see the port side of the aircraft.

Nice model! I especially appreciate the drooped elevators – so typical of a parked Spitfire.
Red crowbar is a classic no-no. Green or NM during the war. Also, the cockpit hatch shouldn't hang limply straight down; it stands out at an angle, as you'll see on any picture.
Still, looks every scale inch a Spitfire!
Kind regards,
Joachim

Great to see this built.
I always assumed it was based on the old Vb kit, but judging by the shape of the fin, it seems to be based on the newer Mk.I.
Very interesting.

Well turned out
All models are equal. Some models are more equal than others.

It looks great but any faults you
may think it has are probably
being exaggerated by the great
photos you've taken of it.
Lovely job Don,
Pete.

Looks good. The lighting in the photos is even, showing the model off well, and without heavy shadows underneath. How did you set up the lighting to get that? Used a light tent?

I have seen an interesting Light Tent on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro-photogra ... 917&sr=8-1;
24" tent plus two lights, for only £38

What green did you use? It looks like H30. H116 is your best Humbrol match unless you fancy mixing your own. It's a shame Hornby can't get this right in the colour call-outs in their new kits.
Other than that, it looks jolly good!

Thanks Guys,
I appreciate all those comments.
If the light level is low I tend to use reflectors or the light from a couple of LED lights.
It all depends in what type of light you view the finish.
The colours Airfix use in their instructions are only a guide, if you know better then go with it.

No I don't use a light box just diffused daylight if possible.Stevekir wrote:Looks good. The lighting in the photos is even, showing the model off well, and without heavy shadows underneath. How did you set up the lighting to get that? Used a light tent?

The green I used was Humbrol 30, I consider 116 to be too dark. I suppose it is a matter of opinion what is the correct colour.Stevekir wrote:I have seen an interesting Light Tent on Amazon:

Re: Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Va Wing Commander D. Bader - Finish
Re my post, quoted above. I have now bought the light tent and have carried out some experiments. My aim is to produce an image without any shadows underneath (just my preference). I don't have a finished model to try so I have chosen two pots, one of a roughly similar colour to a Spit. (Well, vaguely like!). Here is the result (let's hope the image appears from photo bucket):Stevekir wrote:I have seen an interesting Light Tent on Amazon:

I used two existing 40 W desk lamps (the type with a lump of glass for the bright bulb with two wires sticking out), one on each side, and a fluorescent desk lamp underneath to overwhelm any bottom shadows (although with Photoshop's magic that light might be unnecessary). The background came out with parts darker than the rest, but a quick job in Photoshop by selecting all this background and pasting in white fixed that. The addition of a test background in Photoshop gave the result).
Many model photo shots are taken with the camera looking a little down. Perspective causes the image to enlarge and therefore lean out at the top because the camera is slightly nearer the model there (think of the opposite when photographing tall buildings when looking up). To avoid that I had to hold the camera about 3 feet away, with telephoto on (although in my pic I did not stand away far enough as can be seen by the lean in the cup on the right.) . The result is what I want.
An ideal result would be to paste a suitable sky + landscape as the background (although the stationery propellers would be a give-away).
