Revell 1/48 Sopwith F.1 Camel - Sissels battle

Post by Sissel »

For those of you who have followed this build in my workbench thread will know what a battle it has been. It was started back in April, but put aside due to GBs and more tempting models.
I was pleased with the model until the rigging stage, that's where things went wrong. One reason the model almost, almost went to the bin.
If interested in hearing how that began, click here. Scroll down to third post and keep reading the next pages. ;-)

Very pleased to call this done.
It was hard to get decent photos inside or outside, but here they are.

No. 43 Squadron, Tourquin, France, Summer 1918. Flown by Cpt. H.W. Woollett, 35 victories.

Well done, Sissel! I'm glad you persevered. The rigging came out well in the end!

Terrific build, love your wood effect and good job on the rigging. Is it your first rigging job? My first one was stretched sprue that looked like bridge cables when I'd finished ;-)

Lovely build.

Now that's really impressive: beautiful paintwork and excellent rigging. The wood effect, as others have said, looks great.

Especially cool given that you're starting with a kit that began life with Aurora back in 1956! At least Revell/Monogram sanded off the engraved markings for you!

Wow, I didn't realize that! I bought one a few years ago, thinking, for some reason, that it was a relatively recent new mould. Of course, as soon as I opened the box, I realized it wasn't, but I didn't know it was THAT old.....!!!

I think the only "state of the art" Camel is the Eduard 1/48th one. R-M cleaned up the moulds from the Aurora days, so it's not exactly as Aurora released it, but it is that old! The "second-generation" Hobbycraft version in 1/32 is pretty good, but it's not what Roden or, especially, Wingnut would make of it (but apparently it's enough to STOP Wingnut doing one ;-(). I think with the WW1 anniversary coming up that Airfix releasing one in 1/24 (only a little bit bigger than the Revell 1/28th classic) in 2016 for the 100th anniversary of the Camel's first flight is a "no-brainer", but I'm not Airfix's new products guy...

M.

That is a really good build with an excellent finish. Rigging bi-planes is a bit of a fiddle, but larger ones are more difficult in my opinion because any mistakes are more obvious. I am really pleased that this did not end in the bin because that would have been a great waste of real effort and skill on your part. Mind you I know how you must have felt....

It is. And most probably my last.

Wow, I had no idea! I guessed the contents would be old looking at it. I wonder how much they refined the moulds. I see this kit was relaesed in 2004. Defo no 'new-tool'. Very few parts and fit is good apart for wing to fuselage. And I did have to amputate the pilot's right foot...
