Never too many Spitfires?

Post by rob_van_riel »

Paul Bradley keeps reminding us that one can never have too many Spitfires, but I wonder, does that include horrors like this one?
I found this at the local discount shop. In and of itself, this was cause for some celebration, because any kit showing up outside of specialised model shops, that is, anywhere kids might find them, is something to cheer about. The box looks hopeful (despite having no brand on it), and the kit only cost a whopping 2 euros, so I figured why not, and bought it.

Image

The contents of the box, unfortunately, were shocking. In addition to the sprues shown, there was a ready-to-disintegrate brush, and four small pots of horrid paint, along with a few stickers. No real instructions, just a top and side view, but most parts fit in only one way anyway.

Image

The result after 15 minutes of hacking away is this:

Before anyone asks, yes, the wings are supposed to go on like that, they are not reversed. The tabs won't fit the other way around, and this is exactly what the plan view shows.

So, fellow plastic hackers, does this qualify as a Spit?

That kit is sold in N.I. as 'A British Fighter'.
Even a Starfix kit is better.
Ach, sure, it'll look fine under a lick o'paint, ;-)

It'll need a gallon of emulsion put on with a roller to make that look better. :ha:

The panel lines are too deep....

No, this doesn't count as a Spitfire. Rather deceptive to have a photo of the real thing on the box lid....

I know what that is... a Splatfire.

And square like Manhattan or Kristiansand.

Well, it does say on the box: "design and paint your own fighter plane".
So I'm assuming they lay heavy on the design your own part, cause this one needs it.

I know what this needs to sort it's problems, they come in .22 calibre and move at very high speeds.
Seriously though, certainly not a Spitfire.

All the best.

I wonder....if one was to cut off each wing at the second panel line from the root, then turn them to fit the opposite side...would this make the wings better? Cutting at the first panel line might be better but it messes with the u/c and radiators.

Plus, the wings are more Tempest shaped than Spitfire.
And the canopy is too far back.

Just put it in the bin and walk away.

It looks awfully like the Spitfire model that appeared a year or so ago in a very "Airfix look-a-like" box.

It's a travesty of a model and should be removed on the basis of it being totally misleading.

Trading Standards should also be alerted.

Perhaps with a great deal of elbow grease it could be made up to look like some kind of fighter, but a Spitfire? Eesh. Best cure all would be strapping a firecracker to it. Guy Fawkes Day isn't that far off.....

Good. In that case I need not show any mercy

The thought had occurred to me, although I had either 303 or 8mm Mauser in mind (trying to stay in character and all that), but the use of "alternative targets" is frowned upon at the range.
