Airfix Bf 109E-3 (Kit No. A55106) 1:72
Airfix Bf 109E-3 (Kit No. A55106) 1:72
Another small starter set build, this one featuring the aircraft of Obit. Werner Pichon-Kalau von Hofe, early in his career of 21 kills.
Although I had planned to crack into my stash after completing the Spitfire Mk1a I made for my son, I saw this in Home Bargains (keep your eyes peeled in such places for kits at knock down prices) and bought it to partner the Spitfire. I've always liked the 'Dogfight Doubles' concept, ever since I was a kid myself playing with the Spitfire & Me110 set. This is likely to be a theme in my builds.
Some pics below of the build, which went together really nicely. If anything an even better fit than the recently made Spitfire and very enjoyable to make.
This time I was careful not to apply too much acrylic when painting before assembly.
Pilot & cockpit close ups with decals added to instrument panel. I ignored the paint scheme for the pilot, which was limited to the 4 supplied acrylic paint pots and decided upon the uniform shown after a bit of research.
At this stage I had a bit of trouble with the Spitfire but with the Bf109 the cockpit & fuselage halves went together absolutely seamlessly - a superb, snug fit.
However.... I got a bit carried away when painting the central part of the three part canopy (before assembly) and ended up making a mess of it. So, I tried to clean it with water and the acrylic just smudged. Then I tried to clean it with Revell Aqua Colour Mix acrylic thinner and it basically melted the canopy! Lucky for me that the cockpit canopy came in three pieces because the bit I had ruined was the only one I could have scratch built, being totally rectangular in shape! I got hold of some '20 Thou' thickness clear acrylic sheet (Bayer Vivak) at a local model shop (Lendons in Cardiff) and after a couple of attempts was able to fashion a new canopy with the thin frame lines incised with the point of a 10a scalpel ...Phew!
In my impatience I didn't take any more build photos, so here's the finished model:
And, finally, together with its partner and Nemesis:
Apologies for my indulgence with these last pics - I just couldn't help myself!

Very nice indeed. A classic 'Dogfight Double'.

Two very good models - simple to build and easy to make a mess of! However you have managed to do both proud.

Very nice. I especially like the paintwork on the 109.

Thanks everyone. To be honest it came out better than I expected and was really satisfying to make. Just need to pluck up the courage to start adding colour washes to enhance surface detailing next!
