Another Airfix Spitfire Mk I in 1/72
For all the complaining I have done about Airfix's recent batch of new moulds, I have to admit then when they get it right they get it RIGHT!
This spit was built OOB. I only added a stretch fabric aerial wire and tape seat harnesses.
The kit was a pleasure to build, and I found it to be more or less idiot-proof. I understand the decals are not quite right, but I wanted to do it OOB just to see what it looked like.
I'll need to purchase at least two more to do an early MK I and a MK II.

I recall hearing something that the squadron codes are too light, and something is too big. I don't remember what it was though. They look ok to my eye

I like it - The fuselage decals look large but I don´t know if their right or not!

They are right, 610 squadron had huge markings as I think the size was orignally intended for use on bombers.

At the moment, like you, I enjoy building the new tool Spitfire. You created a fine Spitfire. The camo patern looks very good.
I always wondered if these early Spitfire's had stencils everywhere or that they were delivered "clean".

I'm not sure about the stencils Henk. But when it comes to 1/72 scale, I generally only apply the most visible (read: largest) stencils. The real bitty ones just are too much effort for very little return

I too have completed this model (although nowhere near the same standard! - congratulations ) and I have to say I loved how it fitted together. I am still very much a novice modeller, but even I know that if you don't need to apply a lot of filler to the wing joins etc. then you are onto a winner.
Will write history dissertations for modelling supplies...

Good looking model. Didn't the Mk1's have large markings than latter Spitfires? Lyell

That's a beauty of a Spitfire and a nice choice of markings!
Re: Another Airfix Spitfire Mk I in 1/72
The decal codes look too light, they should be medium sea grey, a little greyer and bluer, but contemporaneous photos often show them as quite pale. They should be a scale 4' in height, 610's paint shop interpreted the AMO literally, although the document itself permits smaller size lettering to be used if it were more practicable. Letters would be applied either at the squadron or a maintenance unit, that is why codes are so diverse in appearance. The AMO provides criteria for sign-writing, but I don't think stencils would be used. Maybe Edgar could clarify that.
Nice work Ralph

Thanks everyone. Thanks Peebeep for that.
I also noticed that the yellow on the roundels is too thick
