Airfix 1/72, Aichi D3A1 Val.

Post by IvanV22 »

A really nice old kit, but it needed a lot of filler !

Image

It went together nicely , but masking the canopy was a lot of work.

And now for the painting, for a long time ago I bought a big bottle ( 500 ml) of poster paint on sale at a local shop, didn’t know what I was going to use it for….but it was cheap and the only colour left. I used in a airbrush on a Zero some time ago , so now it was the Val`s turn. I mixed it 50 -50 with water and it works fine , but I wonder if I will ever empty the bottle? Diluted 50% with water that gives me 1 litre of paint (almost a pint) in 1-72 scale that’s 72 litres of paint, that’s a lot of Zeros and Vals…

Image

The decals came on fine and after sealing it with Pledge Floor wax and a very light weathering the kit was completed. For weathering I used Artist acrylic tube paints diluted with water.

Hope you liked it.

Thanks Shaun.
I\m finding it very interesting to experiment in using other paints and materials in my model making.

Nicely done. it seems to be a current trend in modeling circles where people are turning to Kraft Acrylic paints. More paint per bottle and much cheaper. I know I've been buying them up like crazy.

I nice rendition of an elderly kit. The main problem with the kits is the rivets. Said in a Michael Caine voice, "Rivets, thousands of 'em".

I pulled mine out of the stash a while ago but the sight of all "them rivets" put me off.

That's rather nice. Not something you see everyday in fact Japanese WW2 planes apart from the Zero tend to be a forgotten species.

Certainly in this part of the world. You tend to see more WW2 Japanese models on American model sites (and of course, I'm sure they are popular in Japan too).

Japanese aircraft - a 'forgotten species'. Certainly there is a limited selection from a few western manufacturers, but nobody should have any problems in acquiring a considerable range of Japanese types, especially from Japanese kit manufacturers and goodness knows, there are several of them from which to choose. My collection merely scratches the surface of what is available.

Anyone who can get the decals and the tail to look good on this kit, as you have done, deserves all credit.

I agree with the "Forgotten Species" piece. That may be what has attracted me to them. Not a lot of people out there doing them. I keep saying I need to get more of them but to this point I haven't.
