RF-86F Sabre 1/72 Fujimi kit bash *Finished*

Post by Barry »

I wanted to do a USAF RF-86, but the Fujimi kit has the extended span -40 wing with slats which is correct for the Japanese version, but not for the American ones. Fortunately, Fujimi used the same fuselage moldings for all of their Sabre series, so I was able to just take the camera housings and gun port blanking plates from recci kit and put them on the short span US kit.

Here you can see the difference in span. I think that the outline of the -40 wing tip should parallel that of the shorter wing, but I haven't yet found the material to prove or disprove that.

I've added arm rest detail and yellow ejection handles to the seat, Otherwise OOB. The space around the intake trunking behind the cockpit bulkhead is plenty big enough for nose weights.

Wing-fuselage join was too snug and needed a lot of careful shaving away to get a smooth fit. Not careful enough here..this little gap is my fault.

Added detail behind the seat based on how Hobby Craft did it. The pod covers the camera's film magazine.

Camera fairings. I've read that the US ones were shaped differently from the Japanese ones, but I couldn't really see it in the photos I found, so I'm not worrying about it.

Where it stands today. Note the lack of guns.
