James' Angel on the telly **FINISHED**

Post by JamesPerrin »

I'll be applying most of Merlin's improvements. Jazzing up the cockpit with a w/m seat and some scratch details. I'm going to be building it in the proper markings as supplied but I'm interested in trying to replicate the original model's style panel shading which of course was an attempt to make them look like the 'real' thing. I'm find the concept of making a model of a model interesting. In theory you could make it look more realistic looking than the original studio models!

Titan has already shown you what's in the box so I post pics when there has been some progress.

This is definitely not a GEM of a kit. The moulds do look a bit worn and the snap fix pins have caused a number of sink marks. In fact I cut most of the snap fix pins off as they stopped you getting the parts to fix snuggly together. I've cleaned all the parts up, opened up the intakes in the fin and started to sand off the raised panel lines. The nose has been sanded down to a be more pointy. Though the forward bulkhead has incorrect protuding missiles I added this as the area can then be easily filled in and the recessed missiles drilled out.

Not sure what to do with the intake blank #6 which makes them rather shallow. NB the instructions position it incorrectly anyway, it should clip to the back of the cockpit area.

I need to crack on with the cockpit first so I can get the fuselage closed up, whence the real work starts.

Nothing more to show I've just been finessing the parts; standing down intake lips, opening holes, thinning wing fences etc.

Whilst you referred to Kibble in my thread, I thought I'd stick this (erroneously) in yours!

Kibble is also a term used for a small rock of crack.
Educational, this modelling lark, isn't it? :-D

It has something of a mesh texture on my kit. Is it supposed to have that? If so, then it wouldn't be out-of-place being in that position.
Yeah, but I've been trying to out if it's correct without much luck so far. Need to watch a few more episodes on YouTube

Typically I set my cockpit floor to high and Destiny has suffered for my mistake. Not helped by the Airfix canopy being rather to flat.

I'm still working on the figure. The uniforms are quite simiple and so I've removed most of the detail. The helmet has been reduced on size and I've started some putty work to add her feminine charms.

Cheers. It's all painted up and the fuselage close. Will post some pics tonight.

The cockpit had an under of Hu64 with then allowed me to rapdily paint it using acrylics later on. The pilot will be added later after going on a further crash diet.

I approached the intakes in similar way to Bruce, removing the original location ridge and moving them back to the locating pin. New vanes were added that come just shy of the the intake lip.

As you can see it has been slathered with filler. One on the take halfs has a gap big enough to require card shimms. There was a big step from the back of the intake to the fuselage. Rather than sanding away a mountain of plastic that might have left the rear of the intake too thin I added a triangle of card to the fuselage and will attempt to blend this in later.

NOTE: I've left the wing off at this stage so that the intake to fuselage join can be easily worked on.

Anyone else noticed the discrepancy in the outer tail ridges? The starboard one starts about 3mm before the port one.

Nice work so far James, and yes I had the same on my kit with the difference in length so I made them the same size.
I am now on the second round of filling and sanding with mine I've erradicated the ridge underneath the fuselage to intake join , managed to fill the gap in the port intake and blended in the pointy nose, I should be able to finish the cleaning up tomorrow. No pictures yet as who want's to see filling and sanding progress it's bad enough doing it without having to see pictures as well. :-D

Cheers Mark, I've evened mine up too. I added a bit of card to make the slots the same length and then added the dividers from thin card. Once these have hardened in place I'll carefully score through them with a fresh blade, otherwise they're bound to come lose. The notch for the tailplane was cut back so that the retro thruster housing has greater depth.

Image

Here you can see the rounded triangle of card I used to help blend in the intakes. Sanding it down was probably as much effort as sanding the intake so no winners here.
