Re: Paul's Patrol Hampden
Cheers, Jim. I cut away the top of the underside glasswork, and I'll add the twin guns and framework later.
In the meantime, the wings are on. Following Julian's issue, I cut off the tab on each wing lower half before joining them together - they fit just fine then. Seam-wise, I didn't have any issues up top, but I had to fiddle around down below:
Very pleased with the upper seams - no gaps at all, but I needed to shim the bottom seams with strips of 10 thou. Nothing too drastic though.

Tidy stuff, is that wing spars you've added to the undercart bays?
I've just started reading Bomber Command by Max Hastings again, I am in awe of the fellas that trotted off to war in these early machines, and the idiocy of the high commanders.
Cheers
Jim

Yes, just strips of I-beam to give the impression of something in there - not accurate by any means.
Bomber Command is an excellent book, one of the most readable on BC ops.

I'm reading 'Enemy Coast Ahead' by Guy Gibson at the moment as his pre-Lanc duties were mostly on Hampdens, low and medium level at night, even experimenting with dive bombing tactics, which worked quite well but had the occasional unfortunate side effect, much to the alarm of the bomb aimer, of collapsing the Hampdens nose glazing during the high-G pull out!

Re: Paul's Patrol Hampden
Not a lot to report form this week - I painted the bomb bay and wheel wells black, as well as the U/C bits; wheels are assembled; U/C bay doors thinned down.
Tomorrow, I'll need to airbrush one of the camo colours, then the other colour on Sunday - I need to finish the model by the 17th, when we go on vacation for the rest of the month!

Didn't happen - got the transparencies glued on then got stuck in to the Dora. It was too cold and windy to do any airbrushing this weekend, and we had a foot of snow form Friday through yesterday, plus more on the way. Luckily, there's no camo pattern to worry about and I should still be able to be done by the 16th...!

Ooo brrrr, hope you got something to warm you up, Brews needs to look at warming beers.... hey I just thought Arizona! I don't associate snow with Arizona. I had a night in Flagstaff a few years ago, and snow didn't cross the mind..
Cheers

Re: Paul's Patrol Hampden
No worries, Jim - a common misconception. Although we are listed as "high desert" - we are at 7,000 feet here - we actually average around 100 inches of snow per year. There's a ski resort a couple of miles up the road. It regularly get to sub-zero - it was 1 degree F yesterday morning. More snow on the way today apparently....

Isn't the next state over, Nevada, the Spanish word for "Snowy"?

Nevada is derived from Sierra Nevada, or Snowy Mountains, the main mountain range to the west of the state and shared with California. They are very snowy.....

What with being mountains and all. Yes, that makes sense.

Ah yes, warm sea temperatures. Don't you need warm sea temperatures for hurricanes?jRatz wrote:As opposed to living on the east coast, slightly in the south, where the warm waters of the Gulf Stream flow gently by ....
Pah! you pesky folks with your continental climates! Come to our lovely mild - er grey, damp, wet, miserable - island!
(Hampden's looking good BTW, Paul)

Re: Paul's Patrol Hampden
Weather in the low-forties today - time to get the airbrush out!!
I spent last week working on various sundries. One thing I realised was that there was no way I was going to get the torpedo to look right, and lacking conclusive photographic evidence of how it looks mounted, I chickened out and used the closed bomb bay doors....
I spent yesterday masking off the canopies. I have discovered that I'm not that good at free-handing canopy frames and the endless hours spent cutting Tamiya tape to size IS actually worth the effort..... So I airbrushed both camo colours today, and added some subtle post-shading on the major panel lines.
Anyways, here is where we stand at the mo:
There's a little touching up to do on the canopy frames, but not too bad:
The white plasticard semi-circles are to help mount the engine cowlings. Note that the nose transparency's MG survived all the banging about during the masking/painting process!
Decals on later, then time for fiddly bits. I think I might actually get this done by Friday, before I go on vacation....
