Brickie's Svenska Hampden

Post by Brickie »

Unexpectedly joining this one, don't plan to be doing anything complex as I've got other time pressures as well as the Dora Dora Dora build - but saw the kit on a classified ad cheap in Tesco and figured it was meant to be.

Out of the box, Swedish decals - because whenever there's an option for something a bit off the wall, I'll be the one building it...

Welcome to the Hampden GB Brickie, I'm looking forward to seeing one in the Swedish scheme.

Right, I've made a start, but nothing terribly exciting to show for it so far. I've slapped some IJN Interior Green around the inside of the fuselage and painted some bits on the sprue.

I'm planning on doing mine in Swedish marking as well for the same reason, looking forward to seeing it done.

The book "Handley Page Aircraft since 1907" contains a lengthy description and 3-view drawing of the original Swedish specification, known as the HP.53, which was a Hampden-ish floatplane -- quite interesting ....

Gosh, I'd like to see that.

I was wondering the other day actually what the Flygvapnet used them for - I'm assuming maritime patrol or somesuch since I don't know how much use they had for a "heavy" bomber...

Cheers for that JRatz. Been meaning to ask - you're not the John Ratzenberger are you? ;)

Having looked at Bluesteels' interior, I'm going to attempt to put a bit of detailing in, though no crew in my case. Just some strips of paper for struts, a couple of black boxes and the like.

Nothing's likely to happen this week though, as I'm in a play so won't be home while 11pm or later every night. If anyone's in the York area, they'll be more than welcome to come and watch me in Travels With My Aunt

Ah, here we go...
Wikipedia wrote:Reconnaissance Wing F 11 based at Nyköping operated a single HP.52 for evaluation under designation P 5. After the war, the aircraft was sold to SAAB where it was operated for testing avionics.
So I'm not so much building a Swedish Hampden as the Swedish Hampden.

Now, since we're having a new kitchen fitted I have the day off work to "supervise" and managed to get a little interior decor done on my Hampden as well.

Camera's not working but there's not much to see at the moment, just some not-really-thin-enough strips of card glued on the inside in a lattice pattern and a couple of boxes. Oh, and a spar box like Bluesteel's.

Waiting for the PVA to dry and then giving it all another coat of Interior Green before picking out some details.

Sounds good to me. Just beware of the spar box, if it's as wide as the interior floor, you'll need to cut out a section from the flanges of the wing roots or they will foul the box - or just shave 50% off the flange as it's unnecessarily large anyway.
