Re: Brickie's Shrike
Well, wait no longer...
Here's the bird all masked up for the red to go on...
... and here's the red. still needs a little tidying up round the edges, and where the red bled along panel lines under the tape, but overall I'm quite happy with that.
and a topside view without the tape. I've also coloured the exhaust stacks and guns in gunmetal.
Next up - Klear, decals, then weathering.

Re: Brickie's Shrike
Got the main decals on, except for the tail swastikas which were donated by Beany (thanks mate!) and I need to find what I did with them.
Aside from the funny crosses, it's down to stencils and warning panels, which I hate doing with my big fat fumble fingers.
The red looks very red, I'm wondering about giving it a brownish wash just to bring it down a bit and suggest "a bit muddy" - what do you think?

Re: Brickie's Shrike
The red does look a bit bright. I don't think a brown wash would help as this would ruin the white stripes. I think the red will lose it's 'redness' once you get a coat of matt on it, so don't worry too much. I used a dark grey as an undercoat to prevent this problem.
Also (in case you were unaware) the green camo colour on the wings doesn't stop where the joint on the model is. It extends up to the panel line just outside those rows of rivets. Hope that doesn't cause you a headache.

Still, easy enough to add the extra bit and it does make sense.
Re: mud spray - at the risk of sounding stupid, my instinct is to dip an old toothbrush in some brown paint and run my thumb through the bristles. That's not going to work right, is it...?

Re: Brickie's Shrike
Another question, if I may. I've just noticed that the instructions tell me to attach a little aerial to the underside of the plane. However, they aren't terribly clear on where it goes, and I can't see a hole or indentation anywhere to indicate. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Re: Brickie's Shrike
Thanks, I've found where it's supposed to go and there's definitely no indication on the kit itself. I think I may have to leave it off, I should have drilled out a hole for it earlier...
Decals are all on now (except for those damned swastikas) and some weathering done.

Re: Brickie's Shrike
Aha, found them. And it's all sealed in with matt varnish, I just need to attach an aerial wire and I'm done...

Re: Brickie's Shrike
Last set of interim shots, I'm off to do the aerial wire now and will take some official "finished" shots tomorrow in the daylight. I think I'll give the second one a miss, I don't feel that keen...

Well done on toning down the red. Great finish.

Re: Brickie's Shrike
It didn't need toning down too much - as suggested, the matt finish took a lot of the aargh my eyes out of it and a bit of Tamiya Smoke and Citadel "Bestial Brown" gave it a used look.

Oh, absolutely. Really useful and very enjoyable. And interesting to see so many different ways of approaching the exact same pieces of plastic...
