Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
Good tip for doing them gear up is to do them BEFORE closing the wings - much easier to get them flush then! Looking forward to the dayglo!

Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
It's beginning to come together now :
Wings & twin boom on.
There are quite a few fit issues but I would expect that of a kit this old. Nothing too dramatic, just need a little filler here & there. The engine intakes are far too large so will need very careful sanding & dry fitting.
Now on with the canopy.

Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
I have managed to get a primer coat on and as usual it has highlighted a few flaws that need attention.
The gun pack under the nose is terribly undersized.
Not too much work though, then on with the Day-glo Orange.

Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
Managed to get some paint on the Vampire tonight.
Not perfect but good enough for Government work.
Now on with the day-glo orange. About a dozen brushed on coats I should think!

Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
Nice work O.T. I see the Mbox F-5B there too . Did one myself a year or two back . Watch the decals , lots of white gloop when you slide them off.

Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
Good advice, have had lots of problems with Matchbox decals in the past so I will have a look in the stash. Not even sure what country I will do yet, it was just laying around half finished so it WILL GET BUILT before I buy any more kits. (that resolution has already fallen by the wayside!)shangos70 wrote:Nice work O.T. I see the Mbox F-5B there too . Did one myself a year or two back . Back to the Vampire:
I have un-masked the canopy which turned out great. I am currently masking off the areas that require orange paint. Pictures to follow - hopefully.

Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
It's a Tangerine Dream.
The first coat of orange is going on:
I decided to use Humbrol Enamel 30 applied with a hairy stick, might get away with just a couple of coats that way but I will have to leave it overnight to dry
It doesn't look too bad so far but you can see the tape lifting off in the next picture.
More to follow.

Re: OT's Springbok Vampire
Masking removed - not too bad:
A coat of Klear has been applied so decaling will start tonight.

The Vamp is looking good!
Too late for your current application, but I include the following as it may be useful in future:
When I brush paint enamel I also find the extended drying time is a real pain. However, if you put on the first (not too thick) coat and give it about an hour to surface dry, then seal it with a brush coat of klear, you can put another coat of enamel on once that is dry (in about 15 minutes). This doesn't half speed up the process of enamel painting!
regards,
Martin
