Box Art Suggestions

Please post ideas that you'd like to see someone not necessarily yourself to build. Like last year I hoping for dynamic displays where stuff is happening eg rockets firing and things blowing up as in Matt's Mirage. But equally art work with interesting backdrops like Paul's Islander flying over the Needles make for a nice display.

Here are the suggestions from last year http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=249; some of these would be great for this years display but I hope to see some new ideas too.

OK, here's the start of a string of them .. I'll make 'em separate posts to make reply easier. As usual, I'm trying to get something other than aircraft into the display.

But I'll lead off with one .. You can't get more CBK than PK-1 !!!

Image

I see cutting the foreground aircraft and and just using the rest of the box art as the background. The model could be mounted close, even perhaps with part of the right wing in the backdrop to make it look very much like the boxart ...

Next, another aircraft .. the Airfix Walrus rescue scene ...

Image

I see a base with the ocean, aircraft, etc -- the background horizon/sky is fairly boring however ....

Last aircraft -- the RE8-Walfisch Dogfight Double ..

Image

There's a plain yellow sky background, we'd have to do something for whatever is below them that isn't seen .. or maybe some fancy curvature of the sky is a better thought.

Semi-aircraft ... the Emergency Set ...

Image

The buildings are just background, the two vehicles & rescuers in the foreground. Something burning with pilot being pulled out could be fullsize and closer to the vehicles. The rescuers in the kit don't really match the boxart but certainly can be made so, perhaps with help from a 2nd kit ...

Aircraft related at least ... heh, heh, heh ...

Image

Everything behind the main truck, gun, crew is background. No worry to try and make cotton ball flak bursts ...

Dennis Fire Engine ...

Image

The "problem" with this is that the artist has used the ladder to divide a peaceful night sky on the right from the off-box flames on the left ... it's a great effect that will only work from straight on to the display ... The kit crew need a bit of work to make them "lean into" the curve of the moving truck ...

Figures -- the most dynamic is the 95th Rifles ...

Image

Easy display, relatively washed out background of sky and mountain (I assume we are in Spain), a simple grass hill. Two significant difficulties -- it takes 5 kits to make the display and the kit only has one figure (kneeling) that matches the box art so four will need some major work ...

Switching to ships ...

Image

I have seen in an Airfix book a variation of this with a flaming enemy aircraft diving to the right into the sea -- presumably from when Ajax was in the Med and not at the River Platte. I do not that exact boxart.

Problem with this is the lack of much background ...

Last but not least ...

Image

This is of course in her pre-Chariot days and there are some inaccuracies, but the sea is reasonably angry and there is a convoy for the backdrop ...

One that I quite fancy:

Image

Covers two bases i.e aircraft and ships, plus there's lots happening with 'splosions and bombs dropping :-D plus I think there is a suitable Airfix 1/600th scale ship I can use with the Ju-88, I could very well be wrong though.

Doesn't look as anywhere near as good once it's been 'sanitised' however:

No more 'splosions

Tom

Edit (Brews): 2nd image changed to link as it is bigger than 800 pixels wide.

Brews wrote:I think that the closest that you can get in 1:600 scale would be HMS Belfast (Town Class). It has two funnels, but each turret has three guns. You could go for HMS Ajax (Leander Class) because it has 2-gun turrets, but then the funnel would look off. A Modified Leander such as HMAS Sydney would be perfect - maybe you can try the conversion yourself or seek a naval expert to assist.
I've done a little net detective work Brews and I think that either HMS Cossack or HMS Hotspur would fit the bill a little closer, the ship in the box-art is a British destroyer (I only know that 'cos of the shape of the Bridge) and of the two I think Cossack is closest.

Chaps,

Apologies as I don't have any pics to hand, but aircraft (sorry!) box arts I really like include:

Airfix Sunderland
Airfix B-17G
Airfix P-61
Airfix Beaufighter / Bf109G Dogfight Double
Matchbox Hurricane IIC
Matchbox Spitfire IX
FROG Barracuda (either landing or taking off shots)
Old Airfix FW190D-9 (where it's carrying a bomb and in deep trouble!)

regards,

Martin

Martin, the FROG Barracuda would be especially good as the display is going to be very Airfixcentic again this year - curse you Roy Cross :ha:
Feel free to attempt as many builds as you like, there was certainly some space to be had on the table last year - it's always better to have too many rather than too few models at the show. Good luck on the collaboration with Paul as well - his Islander was/is a mini-masterpiece, you'll be in safe hands there.

Cheers
Al.

Hi folks

Unusally for me, i have given this some careful consideration :) I, personally, would like to see a mix of classic aircraft, less common box art and non aricraft. I also think that we have scope for a mix of small vignettes and larger set pieces. As a result, i would like to propose the following:

SA3 Viking: taking off from a carrier deck

Henschel 126 being attacked over a fjord by 3 norwegian gladiators

Fouga Magister performing at an airshow

The E boat sinking a liberty ship in the channel

RMS Queen Elizabeth II passing through Suez with all the bum boats surrounding her

The Naval Lynx landing on a Leander class frigate

HP 0/400 being attached by triplanes

Triumph TR4 on a wooded rally stage

Buffalo and Jeep landing on a beachead

DC-3 dropping paratroops over europe

JU52 dropping parachutes over an airfield

German desert reconnasince set at an oasis

German 88mm FlaK being towed

Fairy Rotodyne over tower bridge

BAC 111 at an airport.

Any volunteers ? :)

I would like to do the QEII, the HS126, the TR4 and the reconnasence pair at the oasis with my reserves being the 0/400 and the navy Lynx.
