Revell (GB) B-26 Marauder "Flak Bait"

Post by mattbacon »

This is the one I plan to do - another charity shop find!

Image

I've got an Academy 1/144 B-26 on the way for Flak Bait's wingman. If I can find a 1/285 or 1/300 one for the one in the background, I will get that too.

These guys:
http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/i ... x&cPath=70;

do a range of 1/285 Landing Craft. If someone better informed than me (brews? dirkpitt289?anyone?) can tell me which of the extensive range on offer match best the ones in the pics, I'd be very grateful indeed. I don't know my LCTs from my LCVPs!

Well, Scotia also do a 1/300 B-26, but these guys have one, plus a range of 1/1200 LSTs:

The ones in the boxart pic look like LCTs with one, smaller, LCM

LCVP
LCI
LCM
LCT

and I think you're possibly looking at something smaller than 1:285 to properly force the perspective. There are landing craft in HMS Fearless ....
Proper sequence would be LCVP, LCM, LCT, LCI although the last two were so close as to be a tie.

There are some 350th scale of these, but even that is pushing it perspective wise , IMHO ... I'd think about cardboard cut-out raised just above surface ...

Thanks, chaps... These guys:

http://www.navigatorminiatures.com/prod ... istory=cat;

do them in 1/1250, which might be better for the perspective. They do several in a pack, so I reckon a couple of packs should cover it...

The raw materials are coming together:

The Minicraft B-26 is a rather nice little kit, with finely engraved panel lines. Interestingly, the Revell kit also has finely engraved lines, amongst the extensive rivets. I need to decide what to do about those - sand them down, sand them off, or celebrate the CBK-ness of them? If I leave them, though, I'm worried about the decals settling down over them...

Decisions, decisions...

Off to find my landing craft, now...

Re: Rivets

Depends on how plain the surface will look with out them. If plenty of panel lines then sand them off, if the surface (and as it's a large a/c plenty of it) will look bare then sand them as down as much as you dare. You only need the suggestion of rivets to add some 'noise'.

BTW This is a great choice Matt!

Good points, chaps... I'll take a closer look at the panel lines, but I'm inclined to sand off the rivets and do some minor rescribing if necessary (there are some access hatches that aren't engraved, for example). Today, I've ordered my invasion fleet, and this:

...I could, but I'm short enough of bench hours as it is. Teeny metal ones, grey primer, bit of detail wash and dry brush -- bish bash bosh, job done...

And I'll need what bench time I have for these:

I was wrong about the panel lines - they are mostly raised. Mind you, I think this would be simpler to scribe than the Mirage, and the plastic is crisper...

Here's a 1/300 Marauder... which may be a bit big!

And here's the invasion fleet:

They are beautifully crisp and well-cast... and there's plenty of them!

Now to find the right perspectives and positioning. I shall get started taping up the main kits...

Just need to avail yourself of some oddly shaped dice and your can storm the beaches (toughness 18, 2d20 + 2 air support)

The invasion fleet looks very nice . I also have that old Revell Marauder, cunningly disguised in a new style box to fool the unwary i.e me.

Thought I'd better rev up! The house computer is currently dead, so pix will have to wait a temporary fix via work laptop, but the base is more or less done. There's a flowerpot in there somewhere, but exactly how you'll have to wait and see! B-26's have been taped up and checked for size... that's why it's such a BIG flowerpot...

OK... here we go:

Image

One flower pot. Looking at the box art (which I can see I'll have to repost when I can get at my photo library again) I reckoned that the view basically "tapered" away from the aircraft, so that there was very little "landing" going on in the background. This led me toward some kind of "cone-shaped" display, and then on to the flowerpot. I decided to tilt up the seascape to make it easier to see (and match the image better). The most difficult job was actually cutting the remarkably brittle flower pot (a fiver from the local garden store). Tried sawing and scribing -- to no good effect. Then I thought "one of those pyrogravures would go through this like a hot knife through.... wait a minute!" So half an hour of repeatedly heating a wickedly hooked Stanley knife blade in the gas flam, and it was done. Kate and I got the level for the sea surface plane by holding the pot in a tray of water -- the end result is a sort of S-curve around, so just cutting a straight line wouldn't have worked

Flak Bait will cantilever forward on a wire up from the base, so she's actually flying over the front edge; the larger wingman will be behind and below on a pole, too, and the small one at the back will mount through the skyscape onto a strut behind the cyclorama.

Image

The boats look pretty effective, but they are simplicity itself to paint -- grey primer, a Citadel badab black wash, and a quick dry brush with white for top highlights. The sea is airbrushed water colour, then PVA coated for texture, and the "foam" touched in in white. It's all complete smoke and mirrors, and the whole thing took about three hours, so don't let the base be a big worry when you're doing yours!
