TimJ's Thunderbolt **Finished**
Making it a trio of Matchbox kit Blitzes this weekend I'll be building the P-47D Thunderbolt, using the markings from the Airfix P-47 gift set.
Like quite a few of my kits this has been in the stash for some time. I bought this one at the International Air Tattoo in 1991, so it's about time I built it.
Kick off will be at 1pm today, so just over an hour to go.

Good luck Tim. I hope the decals are OK as the scheme looks really sharp.

Good luck with the build, matchbox kits are like buses, you wait and wait, then three turn up at the same time.

Re: TimJ's Thunderbolt
Hadn't realised there was another Matchbox GB. Good kit choice too, I seem to remember the MB P-47 being a nice one. Please consider building another so that we can have some jokes about a nice pair of Jugs - TIA.
Would ya like to learn to fly? Would ya? Would you like to see me try?

I do have a few more in the stash but I don't know when they'll be appearing.flakmonkey wrote:Please consider building another so that we can have some jokes about a nice pair of Jugs - TIA.
A couple of minutes late starting but everything was laid out ready.
I started off by painting the interior and engine. The undercarriage doors had the part numbers moulded on to them so I had to sand them off.
I'm just off to have somthing to eat now so the next update will be at 4pm.

Goodluck Tim with your blitz, I've not built this kit yet so it will be good to see your build of it.

Re: TimJ's Thunderbolt
Three hours in. As the markings I'm using are for a B-24 Formation Monitor I thought that it probably wouldn't have any underwing stores so I filled the holes for the pylons from the inside with filler which just left lumps on the outside to be removed later.
Most of the airframe assembly has been completed now, the wings will need a dab of filler wher the leading edges meet the fuselage but apart from that no problems to report.
Next on the agenda is the engine and cowling, I'm not sure yellow will cover that dark green plastic too well so I may have to give it a quick blast of white primer.

Re: TimJ's Thunderbolt
I think I built this kit years ago. It looks to have a good shape.
Are you going for the straight 24 hour build?

Re: TimJ's Thunderbolt
That's the plan. If I can get it painted tonight then it will have plenty of time to dry before I come back to it tomorrow morning.Old_Tonto wrote:Are you going for the straight 24 hour build?
Despite the cold weather I decided to nip out into the garden with a Halfords rattlecan to spray the cowling and the fin/rudder. I've given the undercarriage doors have had a coat of Neutral Grey too.
After I put some filler on the wings I'll see what else I can get done while it hardens and the paint cures.

Re: TimJ's Thunderbolt
After putting some filler on the wing roots I gave the wheel wells another coat of Chromate yellow and made a start on the pilot.
Time for tea now, a toasted cheese sandwich and a couple of cakes, after which I have to go out and deliver some birthday presents. Back soon.
