John's Hatchet Job *** Finished ***
The selected thread title is either a poor play on words or a vision of the outcome ….
The new tool Airfix 1/72 Hawk 81-A-2
built as Tomahawk IIA AH896/RM-Y of 26 Sqn (SA), Gatwick, summer of 1941. These aircraft, although considered 2nd line, performed some recon, interdiction, and attack on the continent and stood by to repel any invasion. 26 Sqn received Tomahawks in Feb 41, this particular one from 403 Sqn RCAF, and started conversion to Mustangs in January 1942 with the last Tomahawk gone by January 1943.
From the color profile you can see it is DG/DE/Sky and has the black port wing, which is what attracted me to it. There are a few distinctive markings -- a large black aircraft code "Y" under the starboard wing, a small "H" under the nose left over from 403 Sqn, and a small Springbok heads on each fin flash. This latter will cause me some difficulty -- if a seach of the decal stash doesn't turn something up I'll have to assume away the problem of put a suitably shaped brown splotch on instead. Otherwise the markings -- spinner, band, codes, etc, are standard.
I do not care if a Hawk 81-A-2 is exactly the same as a Tomahawk IIA (see my signature), I am building this OOB. I have not decided on a pilot or not; if I have a pilot, the kit has no stand and no slot for one, so that might be the only hack.
I have a lot going on, just can't seem to get my priorities straight I guess, and the potential for interruptions so my plan is to start this by mid-day Monday the 13th and either blow straight through or do a part 2 on Tuesday the 14th. If I don't hit this window, then I'm really screwed …. I haven't even started organizing paints, etc, yet …

This will be a good one for sure. Good luck John.

Re: John's Hatchet Job
Nice choice John. How do you like the kit so far? I really want to get one of these. It appears Airfix did well with this one. I look forward to seeing your progress.

0930 EST, Monday, 13 Feb
Despite what the (un-blitz-worthy) clock shows, the official start time is in 5 minutes.
I held off on breakfast (oh, the sacrifices) to have a postable meal of "English" Muffins and Hartley's Thick-Cut, as usual with my favorite coffee, Ashley's Organic Indonesian Blend ….
I should correct one error from my last post -- there is provision for a stand, but of course it must be obtained separately and it's one of the new-fangled ones, not the good ol' stand of fond memories ….
First tasks are to get some parts off sprues, slop interior green around, and then do some other preliminary painting …
Exact schedule is again unknown; I have a home maintenance task and then a "must-see" basketball game at 2100 ….

Look at the state of that mug! And the muffins are slightly burnt. Kit parts look nice, though.
Go, John, go!

Re: John's Hatchet Job
1030 EST, Monday, 13 Feb -- 1 down, 23 to go
I did forget to mention the Ipod is charged with some seven days of bluegrass, Cajun, and oldies -- not the I'll need all of that. I started the build listening to Claire Lynch's wonderful 7 minute rendition of Wabash Cannonball.
Anyway, onward …. In step 1, I am keeping the radio mast on. I prefer, and am using, Hu85 for black, not the recommended Hu33. Other than that I've got the int-green, black, and silver on and drying.
If you check the sprue shot, you'll see the gates on the prop connect to the hub -- very neat, it keeps the blades clean and protects them from any stress.
Next hour will be letting paint dry while I cut more off sprues and clean them up and do some other painting, like wheels, not needed until later …

That is John's decal water in the mug. Go John Go.
And don't get hoorah'd about the clock. My old Heathkit clock is an antique now.

I agree the muffins look over done.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

I don't actually mind muffins slightly overdone.

1300 EST, Monday, 13 Feb -- 3.5 down, 20.5 to go
Oops, I let time get away. Actually what happened is that I wanted to make some seatbelts -- simple task until what passes for a bright idea at my age took over. I dug into my Hurricane stash and pulled out a set of Eduard colored photo-etch. Not content with just seat belts I started borrowing various dials, levers, wheels and things to populate the cockpit walls.
I'm almost done fiddling, then some touch-up paint and start to put it together. I did remember to put a base coat of Sky where the fuselage band goes so I can mask over it when doing the DG/DE.
Oops, I don't see my clock in the photo … my bad.
SWMBO just came in, informed me she went to lunch with the "girls", so I guess I better go scrounge something ...
