Post by ian lanc »

Well this is my build and this kit has been in my stash for years
its time to build and share a mighty 1/16th Minicraft Ford model A.

Now that's a biggie. I have Hasegawa's 1/16 RX-7 and 240Z kits. I daren't build them.
Would ya like to learn to fly? Would ya? Would you like to see me try?

This kit is probably the size of Beany's bus. Have you made any progress?

This model has some very very fragile parts and is proving a right 'tester' with me fumbling fingers

I was going to hand paint the gloss blue and black body parts but at this scale it would look
crap so it was out with the airbrush on this one, after spraying i wet/flatted then polished the panels.

This is how far i've got.....

Looks like you been quietly cracking on with this. The blue looks very nice and you haven't lost your knack with the airbrush. The engine louvres look very nicely rendered.

Well guys.

I'm hoping to have this model finish this time tomorrow...i hope !

Doing this build has seriously put me off making fiddly fragile model cars in this scale
its not just a simple bang and glue together and i keep knocking parts off the thing.

Any tips as to what i could use for spark plug leads and pipes :bounce:

Image
The main windscreen which has been a real head-ache in gluing the windscreen into the frame :frown:

Image
Screen and mirrors and fiddly bits fitted, must say this was hard to make up neatly and working from me Tea Tray....lol
Oh the screen can lay up and down, nice touch from the model designers but its a gimmick no one will keep altering it.

Image
Doors and bulk-head would not fit into the correct place on the chassis so i had to skim down to fit
then glued the whole lot down and left to dry for several hours, took the rubber-bands off and one
side of the bulk-head just popped up ! Talk about being on one

Image
Rad needed some form of jig to hold it level for the bonnet to sit down neatly.

Image
I noticed today that there must be something missing from the kit ! There are no angled bits on the louvres
and no hinges, parts H21 and H22. The bonnet will have to be glued directly to the louvred doors now

Image
Came across a problem with the spare wheel ender/holder ! The tyre will 'not' fit in the groove,
look at the picture and you will see were i've been gently trying to remove the plastic.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

The body work looks immaculate Ian!

I can't see how those L shaped pins were ever moulded to the the bonnet parts :???: If you were inclined some bits of wire, bent and superglued in position should work. But I'm the kind of guy who likes to play with working features.

Thanks for your idea's James ;-)

The paintwork has no 'orange peel' or 'runs' anywhere this is down to me wet flatting the
paint with 5000 grade paper and then polishing with Zymol car polish, it really shines nice.

The pins could be made from steel staples and holes drilled into the doors and fitted
but its the other four parts that are not in the kit that really make things harder
i'll see what i think tomorrow, if i tried to make those four little bits they would have
to be 100% accurate to allow the bonnet and doors to open correctly.

Oh i'm not Mr Perfect James ! i noticed today that i've put the tyres on the wrong way
the Firestone names are all on the inside ! How stupid of me

Looks great Ian, and as James has mentioned, lovely work on the polished paintwork. I guess the larger scale helps there, with larger smooth areas to sand/polish.

After trying to make some kind of hinges for the bonnet i gave up because i just could not
get all the four moving parts level so i've left the bonnet as it is on its own hing and the two side doors
just slot into a recess, after two hours of 'trying' i gave up, i reckon i would have lost it big time trying to
bodge the hinges and the model would have been thrown at the wall !

Mike i hit a problem with the gluing of the polished parts !

The glue would not stick so every part had to be scraped before i could do any gluing.

I think it was because i used a polish which Aston Martin use....lol

Polishing the paint at this scale is quite easy but removing the polish residue is another matter :???:

Cheers. Ian.

It looks brilliant Ian. Despite the issues thrown up you've got yourself a really lovely looking build.
