Heller 1/43 Porsche 928 **FINISHED**

Post by JamesPerrin »

One of my favourite cars when I was a kid. A nicely detailed car with full interior.

The kit is handily moulded in black plastic considering I'm going with black as the finish, however it doesn't make for great photos.

I've started by going through all the parts and gluing together anything that can be before painting becomes difficult. The detail is very nice with only a couple of sink marks on the lone wing mirror and central console. I had assumed a black interior with a tan cushions. I was right about the tan but Heller give the rest as Hu70 brick red, so a subtle 80's interior then. I will check out if there are better alternatives.

Image

The body is very nice but thin and flexible with separate bumpers. Some lovely touches such as two tiny windscreen water jets on the bonnet. The bumpers fit well but the thinness of the body means there isn't a lot of contact area and I popped the rear bumper off while sanding down the seams and joins. I've repaired with CA and will tackle the area again tomorrow.

The combination of brick red leather and tan fabric looked much, much worse in real life than it sounds - imagine making an interior from David Dickinson and you're not far off. Tan leather and tan/black op-art check fabric was very popular but you might not want to paint it.

Searching for Porsche 928 interiors has necessitated a stiff drink and staring at a plain wall.

Quite literally nothing to see as I've painted the black plastic with matt black for a primer and the clear parts have been dipped in Klear!

Here is boring fact though:

"The 928 started development in 1971 before the 924, though the 924 reached production first."

Was the 928, the not quite a Porsche, Porshe?

Was that the one that had the Audi engine?

I like the 928 and indeed prefer the shape over the tuned up Beetle. IIRC the 924 engine had its origins in the VW Transporter and was later developed and used by Audi in the 80 Sport. I recall my old boss having the 924 Audi/Porsche combination and it not going down very well in the Porker Owners Club.

I've sanded the heavy join lines on the tires off and then had a go at adding some tread using my Trumpeter saw/engraving do-da. Worked a treat. The tires have then been painted a very dark grey.
