Jim Clark
As I had a nice photo of the Lotus 30 I wanted to build it made sense to paint the figure as the man himself. Citadel paints and clear for shinning up his helmet.

That looks really sharp James. Did you paint shadows and highlights on his face? It looks pretty realistic.

Can you feel his eyes on the back of your neck, James? "How's me motor going son?"
Gosh you are good at figures James, top job.
Cheers

Just washes and a mix of dry brushing & painted highlights. I think the washes were a little too dark especially on the overalls, on his face it helps make him look like he has a little road dirt.

Re: Hawk 1/32 Lotus 30 Ford & 'Jim Clark'
This build is still throwing up issues. When I rubbed down the BRG mainly to get rid of the paint ridges all where I'd mask the yellow little bits of green have flaked off. So my perfect yellow stripe is no longer perfect. I had taken the tape off soon after spraying which I thought was meant to help not lift the paint along the edge. I need to tidy these up before I add a clear coat, but can I be bothered to try decanting some the BRG or do I mix something up to match and hope for the best? Thankfully I'm away at the folks for a couple of days so I don't have to deal with it atm. A long with the Lola cocking up and other things it was not a great modelling week.

Re: Hawk 1/32 Lotus 30 Ford & 'Jim Clark'
I've been stripping and painting all week. Unfortunately this is the hallway, stairs and landing and I've not had much time or energy for modelling. I've been able though to get paint on first thing and then go over it again in the evening. So the interior and wheels are all painted up and I've built a new engine stack ( took two attempt mind as the first set were too fat ).
I made up decals for some made up dials for the dash as well as the cars No 1's.
Making the spares was worthwhile as I could choose the best after gritting my teeth and sticking a circle cutter into the middle of them. Thankfully they went on without trouble. I'm now looking forward to crossing the finishing line shortly after a bit of touching up and putting the wheels on.

Coming along great James, and looks like you successfully touched-up the yellow stripe too.

Oh yeah in the end I found a mix of Citadel's Chaos Black and Dark Angel Green gave a perfect match. A coat of Halford's Clear Lacquer was then applied.Migrant wrote:Coming along great James, and looks like you successfully touched-up the yellow stripe too.

Re: Hawk 1/32 Lotus 30 Ford & 'Jim Clark'
This is a basic kit, even in this upgraded version (the original had two piece plastic wheels). Despite lacking detail and errors it captures the low kart like look of the original, the vinyl tires help give it some weight and sit. The windscreen though is totally the wrong shape and should be curved and not pointy. I think they cut corners (or rather not) as I believe it's the same windscreen that appears in the Chapparal kit. It may be oversized too as its the same length and a little wider than my Porsche 906. I drew the line at trying to add proper headlights and just painted them silver*.
By far the best part of the kit is the additional figure which was very enjoyable to paint.
* Factoid: In 24hr races the headlights were often taped over to keep them clean for the night section.

That looks great, James -- the car has a real "Speed Racer" look (though I didn't realise it was a pedal car, propelled by the driver running along the road as he sits there ), and Jim Clark looks really good...
bestest,
M.

I like it a lot James, very clean and well finished and the driver figure is especially well done.

Well done, I just didn't realize how low slung it was until the driver stood next to it !
