Matt's late-running MG Magnette
Matt's late-running MG Magnette
...having finally got the Aventador off the bench, here's something completely different. Airfix's rather lovely MG K3 Magnette:
As you can see, this is one of Airfix's 1970s "re-boot" classic cars, like the Vauxhall Prince Henry and Alfa 8C, with a lot of parts, and some very fine detail. It's moulded in a hard, and rather brittle grey plastic. I had a couple of fine parts break at ejector pin marks as I removed them from the runners - fortunately the plastic responds very well, and quickly, to Mek-Pak!
I decided to depart from the instructions and build up some assemblies which could be primed and painted before final construction. Red body, tan interior, black chassis. The drive shaft is silver (apparently). The only really dodgy fit is around the separate fuel tank.
That chassis detail... not bad, eh? Springs, axle and steering rods are separate, but there's only about six parts in that picture...
And finally, for now...
This little MG is destined for a diorama, with some nice RAF chappies standing around it (and originally, with one of them sitting in it!) 1/32 scale, eh? As you can see, the Airfix driver is a bit of a lightweight - more like a teenage jockey. The pilot figures are pretty consistent: (L to R) Ultracast, Dartmoor Military Miniatures, Reheat, Airfix driver, Master Box, so I'm inclined to think that the seats and hence the driver in the MG are undersize. I might try to widen the seats a bit so that there's some chance that one of the pilots COULD have got into the car...
bestest,
M.

Looks like plenty of yummy detail in there Matt, I'm expecting great things! No pressure.

Lots of assembling, filling, smoothing and priming to get to this point...
...and the Tamiya British Green is going on. A bit of polishing will be needed in a few days, but it looks OK in the flesh!

Ta, muchly, chaps...
Good progress today:
Here's a big pile of bits, again. The fuel tank at R is having its second round of filler and primer.
Body and chassis. The interior is Vallejo "Intermediate Green". The carpets will be matted, the rest is left satin finish. Chassis has been sprayed black.
Radiator texture has been reproduced using decorative Xmas ribbon. The engraved detail on the part didn't have enough relief to take drybrushing or rubbing dark paint off highlights. This will be much better at a glance...
Widened seats test fitted. Painted in Vallejo "Military Green" with a Citadel green wash.
Unforgiving close up of the dash. The whole thing is an inch wide... The Klear on the dials is reflecting too much in this image, but at real viewing distances it looks rather sharper than this!
Have a great time at Cosford tomorrow, folks. I won't be back to the bench until the evening, after I've dropped Julie off for the week. Lots of modelling time next week, however!
bestest,
M.

The radiator looks superb, I though it was moulded until I read you comment.

Re: Matt's late-running MG Magnette
The ribbon radiator grille just shows the importance of keeping one's eyes open for these useful odds and ends from unlikely sources. It looks very effective.
Would ya like to learn to fly? Would ya? Would you like to see me try?
Re: Matt's late-running MG Magnette
Progress is being made... as young Flak said in another thread, this car modelling lark seems to involve a lot of gathering piles of bits together and painting them. In this case, wheels:
Finally got the "cockpit" (thanks, Jeff...) together
That centre console is three separate parts... and boy, are they difficult to keep under control!
And here's the two main assemblies. Did I mention that the plastic is rather brittle? Somewhere (I have NO idea when) I managed to knock off the nearside (port) axle, and I've had to rebuild one with brass rod. I'm nervous about getting all the wheels on the ground as it is, and this is just making it worse... Also, for reference if you are doing one yourself, the engine end of the prop shaft fouls the transmission tunnel on the top. I've had to trim the mounting rather seriously, and cut away the inside of the tunnel as well, before it fits into place cleanly.
And finally...
This is the bracket that holds the spare wheel on the back. There are five parts, and this is how it goes together... the instructions aren't entirely clear...
I think I'll be done before the 15th!
bestest,
M.

You are right the dash looks very effective from a reasonable distance.

Neat job with the ribbon, and the seat widening has gone well.
Cheers

Re: Matt's late-running MG Magnette
Thanks, both... now we're getting there -- this is a first test assembly of body chassis and wheels, not finally stuck yet.
Fortunately, all four wheels do touch the ground at the same time -- on a flat sheet, rather than my wibbly cutting mat!
bestest,
M.
