That's no egg... that's a space station!

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

That's no egg... that's a space station!

Post by Rob1970 »

It's that time of the year again! The Annual Easter Egg Hunt! (at another forum, but meh... I like to share my wackiness...)
Last year I did a scratchbuild AT-ST with an eggy twist, this year I'd thought I'd stick to the theme.
Image

Aaaand we're off! And like any egg that's off... you need to clean them!

Image

Begone, foul spots! Only took a bit of scrubbing with a sponge and some nailpolish remover... Groovy...
Image

Speaking of groovy... this thing needs a trench. How can you have a trench-run without a trench?

So we sacrifice one egg to make a guide to draw some parallel lines...
Image

Sorted!
Image

Two halves make a whole...
Image

One half -gets- a hole...
Image

...aaaand the hole gets another half...
Image

CA-glue, some kicker, a sanding stick and a little elbow-grease later we have a massive planet-killing laser cannon dish thingy!
Image

And now we start working on making those halves whole again...
Image

Cutting more discs... and holes in the discs...
Image

Each half gets a disc...
Image

Another disc to separate the two halves...
Image

And we have a whole(ish) egg again...
Image

One egg gets sacrificed so I can draw parallel lines on another egg... That's number 3...
Image

Image

And we cut the egg to pieces...
Image

...and we glue all the pieces to the first egg...
Image

Halfway there...
Image

More soooooon!

Great idea, Maybe it's one we should do next easter?.
Not doing egg yolks, I'm too chicken and you'd see white through them,

All the best.

Looking good. Liking how this is coming together.

There was a resin Egg-Star a few years ago.

Also found this one made with a real egg.

All greebled up... (And yes, that's a word... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeble )
Image

Image

Image

Paint time! Grey primer first... (I ran out of egg-shell white...)
Image

Pre-shade...
Image

And covered in RLM 84, Light Grey and a dusting of Gunmetal Black Metallic. The effect is very subtle. Alas too sublte for a camera...
Image

And a coat of Klear... Ready for a wash as soon as the it's dried thoroughly.
Image

Next; working on the stand and preparing for Phase Two (Dun-dun Duuuunnnnn!)

Time to take a stand! Or make a stand...

Printed out a line drawing of the Imperial logo and glued it to a piece of 0.25mm styrene with a paper-glue stick, then pierced each corner with a needle.
Image

A nice fresh hobby blade and some cuts later...
Image

Image

I glued it to the bit of egg-base I was already using, just need to make a few cuts here and there to make the flat piece conform to the curved surface.
Image

Filled in all the cuts with some CA-glue gave it all a bit of sanding...
Image

A coat of primer, then a layer of Gunmetal Black Metalic, and a drybrush with Bright Brass... very shiny after a coat of Klear.
Image

And tomorrow I hopefully get the stuff I need for Phase Two...

More sooooon!

It looks like all the silly puns have been eggs-hausted.

That's a brillient piece of scratch building did you have to shell out much for the eggs?

Phase Two...

More eggs!!
Image

Hmm... too small...
Image

Better!
Image

It needs a nose-job tho... Starting with a strip of 1.5x2mm styrene around the nose...
Image

Creative clamping...
Image

Building up the rim...
Image

More styrene stock... until we have some mass to sand into shape...
Image

And a lot (and I mean A LOT) of sanding to get it into shape...
Image

Filled some holes with CA-glue, and the seams as well...
Image

Can you see what it's going to be yet?
Image

Some square tubing as a base for the canopy...
Image

Front and rear...
Image

Side one and two, one side trimmed up...
Image

Time to do some framing...
Image

All framed up...
Image

And a hole for a loyal little Astromech...
Image

Tomorrow we make some wings for this thing. How many? An x-number of wings perchance..?

More sooooon!

I AM CRACKING UNDER THE PRESSURE!!

Well, not really...

First, I made a template for the wing so I had an idea of the size and angles and stuff...
Image

That gave me a sense of the size the engines should be. I started out by covering some tube with 1mm wide half-round strip of Evergreen. 8 strips in total, evenly spaced. Gotta love Evergreen...
Image

...and then cut the resulting ribbed tube into engine sections...
Image

I shaped the rear end and fitted a wider tube around the front end...
Image

Made them all the same size and gave the rear of the engines a ring. Engines love rings...
Image

Time to make some intakes. I started by closing off a bit of the larger size tube I already used on the other half of the engine.
Image

Excess cut off and the whole thing sanded until it was round...
Image

Cut to size, a hole drilled and reamed out so you get a nice intake shape. I attached it to the main body of the engine with a t-shaped bit of styrene.
Image

The sticky-out bits of the T cut off and sanded smooth...
Image

Repeat until cross-eyed and you have four engines. I greebled up the engines with some random panels too...
Image

Back to the wing. After I cut out four wings using the template I made a second, slightly smaller template to make panels for on top of the wings.
Image

I ended up with two tiny templates (numbered 1 and 2) and a spacer (marked X) to keep the space between the panels constant and a perfect fit for the engines. I marked the templates on some styrene and cut out enough panels to do the wings.
Image

Panels fixed to the wings...
Image

Laser cannons, from some stainless steel welding rod, half a ring of styrene tube...
Image

Result!
Image

Cannons fitted into some more tube glued to the wings...
Image

And wings fitted to the hull...
Image

Image

And on to Phase Three...

More sooooon!

Bloody AWESOME!

Cracking work Rob, loving your solutions for scratch building, I was wondering how you were going to do the engine pods, and those guns are just genius.

Looks like you are hardly egg-stending your self here...
