Captured Alien Attacker (Independence Day), 1/72, Lindberg

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Captured Alien Attacker (Independence Day), 1/72, Lindberg

Captured Alien Attacker

Hi everyone,

Being my first sci-fi kit I started the build with some concerns about how to paint the model as there are lots of panel lines and details to be picked out. Once I had started however it was just a matter of taking it one step at a time and I really enjoyed the whole process. The great thing with this kit is that you can really go to town on the paint scheme or keep it fairly simple (as I have done). Rather than try to copy the craft from the movie I chose to do my own thing and painted the model in simple metallic colours. First was an overall coat of gun metal from a Halfords rattle can followed by various lighter shades of silver (all Humbrol enamels) applied with a brush. I also used a wash before giving the model an overall silver drybrush and final matt coat. The kit comes with a little stand which in my box was unfortunately in need of some repair work to the parts. It looks ok now though and I made a simple base to mount it on. I included the pilot figure (from the Hasegawa pilots/ground crew set) to give an idea of scale – perhaps he is about to take it for a test flight?

You have done a magnificent paint job. The figure really helps give an idea of the scale and adds life to the build. Well done!

That looks great...the pilot really adds to the sense of size of the real thing...I also like that it provides parts for the human mods...

Thanks all. I would recommend this kit if you able to get hold of one. Although it has few parts it is one of those kits where you can build it as it is or really add a lot of scratchbuilt detail. Painting can also be done as detailed or basic as you like too. It certainly is something a bit different for my display cabinet. :)

Didn't they do the Stearman and the F/A-18 Hornet from the film too?. I seem to remember seeing them about with this one.
