Biggles Tarpon Flying Boat (Sikorsky S-43/JRS-1)

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Biggles Tarpon Flying Boat (Sikorsky S-43/JRS-1)

Post by VickersVandal »

This is a DNF from the flying boats GB:
http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=329&t=12401;

The Special Hobby Sikorsky JRS-1 has lots of nice resin detail parts, but it's a pig of a thing to build. I'm pretty underwhelmed by it. The undercarriage was a nightmare! No locating holes or decent attachment points for any of the struts. I needed fifteen hands to put it together.
The book illustrations show a twin tailed machine (a "Tarpon" amphibian) so I cast up a reproduction fin in resin and modified the tail assembly. Other than that, it was pretty much OOB with a scheme to match the book.

Anyway, it's done. Thank goodness.

Well done it looks brilliant.

Considering all the problems that kit chucked at you, I think you have done an excellent job.

Thanks gents.

The camera does it a lot of favours that it doesn't deserve. Maybe shooting against a white backdrop wasn't such a bad idea after all :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Anyway, I'm happy enough with it. It wasn't a particularly high priority build in the collection, so near enough is good enough on this one. It was good to have a GB to motivate me to start on it and then the shame of DNF to force me to finish :mrgreen: :lol:

I like this rather a lot, but being a Biggles fan from way back, that was to be expected.
