Hawker P.1130

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Hawker P.1130

Post by AndrewR »

The Hawker P.1130 project was to turn the Hawker Hunter into a missile armed interceptor, with Firestreak missiles.

The base kit is the Xtrakit Hunter T.7. Do not get this kit unless you want to struggle. No two pieces fit together properly. The wings aren't aligned, and the resin doesn't fit into the plastic.

If you do want to make one, get a Freightdog improvement set, with new wheels and ejector seats.

Freightdog make the P.1130 set, which gives you a completely new resin nose. The instructions on how to modify and correct the Xtrakit are excellent.

I finished this as a Royal Navy aircraft, in a light grey and dayglo scheme which they used for their twin seat Hunter trainers.

This was built in the One Thing To Another GB. The build thread is here:

I added the pitot tube on after the GB. It's a metal Sea Vixen pitot tube.

I like that very much. I had heard bad things about the base kit. I'll stick to my Matchbox one faults and all.

The Matchbox one would have been much, much more straightforward to build, and far less stressful!

There's nothing that can't be fixed on this kit, but it's a serious slog because everything needs fixing. Or binning.

I liked the Matchbox kit. Of course, I didn't make a Hunter out of it -- or, rather, two of them: instead, I used the fuselages to produce a four-seat cockpit (not too dissimilar to the Hunter-based exec-jet Hawker considered producing) and added scratch-built wings to produce a model of one of my favourite fictional aircraft, Firefly 1 from Ivan Southall's Simon Black books, complete with the German Shepherd snoozing in the reat seat . Rather obscure, I know, and I remember it totally baffling the judges at a local club event  . The model may have even survived the Great Move to the UK from Oz, but it's stashed away somewhere. Some day, I may do the same sort of conversion to a single-seater to produce the RAAF fighter version.

Oh, and the P.1130 looks great. Bravo for overcoming the Xtrakit's problems.

I love the idea of a Hunter Executive Jet
