Handley Page Hawthorn NF1

Post by Jagewa »

With the devastation of the Bristol works and the terrible plywood worm scrounge of 1940, England was in dire need of a night fighter to combat the thousand bomber night raids by the Luftwaffe. Sir Michael "Big Stick" Biggins of Handley Page approached the Air Ministry with plans for the rapid assembly line conversion of the Hampden bomber to the Hawthorn night fighter, by removing the bomb bay, using Merlin power eggs instead of the now dwindling supply of Bristol engines, AI MkIV, and an armament of two 20mm canon and four .303 drowning nose guns. After rapid trials a modification was made to the tail fins, and the Hawthorn was cleared for action.

A new squadron was rapidly formed, number 488 Squadron, assembled from mainly Kiwi aircrew. They were quickly brought to operational readiness and had the first operation on the night of the 25 April 1941, with two pilots Flt S. Right, and P/O T. Potiki becoming night aces, with 5 and 6 kills respectively.

Over the coming months the Hawthorn built upon this start, and proved to be an ideal plane for long night patrols and a very stable gun platform. Quickly twenty more squadrons were converted to the Hawthorn, using their long range to harry the Luftwaffe bombers from take off to landing. Its introduction was heralded as the beginning of the end of the Luftwaffe's night bombing campaign.

Hi all, finally finished this Airfix 1/72 Hampden from the GB http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=191&t=2312, I wanted to try a couple of new techniques to me on this one, so took me a while to stop prevaricating about them.

First was masking and painting the codes and roundels, which I used frisket film cut into various circle masks, a time consuming thing, but I'm very happy with them.

The other was using oils as in Splash's tutorial, http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=1268, I tried different colour oils, but I did not like the look, so used white oil colour. I need more practise but I like the effect.

A fun build,

Cheers
Jim

Damn fine effort, Jim with a great back story - the Air Ministry dropped the ball when they turned this one down - not too sure of the function of the 'drowning nose guns' though? Perhaps another future project could expand on their employment... :ha:

Just wondering if that's what they really mean when 'they hose the target'?

oddly enough, I have found references to Hampdens being used as night fighters, but could not find any details.

Is it a coincidence that the codes seem to read "Home" one way and "Meh" the other...?

...and MEOH is a techo bame for methanol which may be a clue as to what the Hawthorn runs on...

"Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirits, is a chemical with the formula CH3OH (often abbreviated MeOH)." (cheers to Mr Wikipedia for that info)
