The Scottish Airforce

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Joking aside I would not stand in the way of Scottish independence, however it would be like turkeys voting for Christmas.
Scotland is more than capable of being independent. If we were such a drain on the UK then Westminster would have cut us adrift a long, long time ago.
Not sure how it would affect all the English folks living up here though and vice versa.
A lot of my neighbours hail from 'dahn sarf' and they think it's a stupid idea.
The two countries are so closely entwined now that the logistics of a break up don't bear thinking about.
Breaking up the Union is daft anyway, Europe walk all over the UK as it is, break it down into seperate diddy wee countries and they'll laugh at us.
A big 'non' for me.

maybe they will invent a big missile called a caber....and maybe the insignia would be a thistle? and perhaps the RAF would loan them 6 typhoons....

On the topic of the original posting: what would a Scots national marking be on aircraft? Perhaps just a medium blue disc with the white saltire through it. One side in Spain in their civil war had a black disc with a white saltire, so if that worked for them, similar would work for the Scots. No need to go more complicated. Tail marking could be a blue rudder or large block with an elongated white saltire - again, as example; Spain has a white rudder with a black saltire.

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Lets hope Scotland doesn't go to war with Greece or Argentina!

I like the idea of the roundel being similar to the flag on the tail but round. Looks different to the RAF type style as well which I think a newly independent Scotland would be wanting to get away from.

In order to have some fun with this topic and still remain within the realms of reality I would suggest the following in terms of aircraft.

A "new" country with limited funds would want a sense of pride regardless of cost or necessity so I think they would source front line aircraft from perhaps Sweden (Gripen), Russia (Su-27, Mig 29, for Helos Mil 24's or the Roovalk from South Africa), perhaps some aircraft might be donated/left behind as gifts by the RAF, a Nimrod perhaps?

You could have a small yet effective air force, realism perhaps set aside just a little...

Is anyone going to suggest this as a possible what-if group build?

If someone did, I would be in.

Perhaps a Breakaway States What If GB??

A Confederate States of America A-10 would be pretty cool...

As the majority of Scotland is hilly or mountains would a splinter pattern camouflage like they use in Scandinavia be a suitable starting point or even a modern digital type?

As for a/c markings how about a blue roundel with an inner white circle with a blue thistle?

For the Navy, smaller fast missile armed patrol craft might be more suited to protect their coastline.

On the subject of tartan does Scotland have a national Tartan or are they all separate clans tartans?

Thanks Thomas, I thought there must be, it's just you only see the more infamous tartans like the Stuart or Black Watch down here in the South.

The Black Watch tartan might make a good camo scheme for low level GR aircraft. Not so sure about the Stuart one though!
