Star Wars Diorama, AT-AT, Imperial Walkers.......FINI.....

From Apollo and Soyuz, to Gerry Anderson, Irwin Allen, Star Wars and Trek to Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and those strange, doe-eyed Japanese school girls...to any model kits you can think of, that only exists in imagination.

Star Wars Diorama, AT-AT, Imperial Walkers.......FINI.....

Post by Allan31 »

I started this diorama project about six months ago....

Image

Image

I've been steadily picking away at it, huge fun but really a lot of work, not just once but fours times. These old molds were never great to begin with and they are no better now. A screen grab of the real deal....

Image

I prepared the only little Snow-Speeder I had for molding. I will cast up several copies for the finished diorama.

Image

I have a downed Walker in my diorama. I thought it would be the easiest but turns out just the opposite was true. This one was the most work. All the legs had to be reworked and all the parts swapped around.

Image

I used this screen grab for reference...

Image

And came up with this...

Image

Image

The other three walkers I focused on trying to get them different from each other. All the legs and heads in different positions to add some interest.....

Image

Image

I think this is pretty close to the finished composition. The base works out to be 20"x25"...

I will add Speeders on wire looping around the legs per the film. If interested, check out "Hoth Battle" on Youtube to see what this is all about....

Lots of painting and weathering next.... and snow too !!!
Thanks,

My favourite of the 3 original Star Wars films, AMT also had a diorama set for the Battle of Hoth. Looking forward to seeing this one completed.

The fallen walker looks pretty good to me. It's going to be interesting seeing this built up if this is going to be a build thread, bloody big dio though!

I've a Revell AT-RT that I started chopping up to show more natural movement, and that's turned out to be more work than I thought, the build slowly grinding to a halt. It's been quietly sidelined while I'm concentrating on a group-build elsewhere...my excuse anyway.

Like the idea. I still have one of these in the stash as well as the Revell kit. I actually shelled out for a resin replacement head for the Revell kit but the thing is solid resin so I either have to hollow it out some or pin the finished beast to a base (which I will probably do anyway). Also, the rear of the new head is full of large bubble completely obliterating the detail. Course, if I hollow it out I would just have to replace that anyway but still.

Looking forward to seeing your finished piece.

The Empire wins this battle causing the Rebels to run again. After a hair raising flight through an asteroid field and almost becoming lunch for a space slug, Han ends up incased in carbonite. Luke finds out Vader is really his Dad and... oh, you meant with the diorama. Me too.

AHHHH!!! SPOILERS!

Don't worry, I saw it ages ago. It liked it, but I think VI was the best movie.

Looks good so far. I think you should have left the fallen Walker like it is in the picture before the screen grab with the caption "So that's what that button does!" :ha:
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!
