Airfix Saturn V Apollo

Airfix Saturn V Apollo

Post by Happymeal »

Hi all,
Here's my recently finished 1:144 Airfix Saturn V. I built it using essentially the contents of two airfix kits as I had a previously started kit which I'd abandoned after messing the paint job up. A lot of detail in this kit is either incorrect or missing altogether, but considering it's age and probably the lack of resource material available at the time, this is understandable....I ended up using various bits of scrap plastic, sprue, plastic card and other bits and pieces to try and add some extra detail to my model. Some of the issues are either very difficult or impossible to fix short of scratch building a new model, so I just made a few mods were I could without being too fussed about the scale rather just creating something that looks a bit more like photos of the real thing. Small magnets were used to hold some of the seperable parts together (Escape tower to CM, CM to LM and LM upper stage to lower stage).

Anyway here's the pics.......

Nice job!
I also fouled up the painting of my Saturn V, but felt better after attaching several small fireworks to the glued together full stack and watching it take off  :-D
This was about 35 years ago I would add!
Best wishes

In the next door garden, whereupon it slowly burnt itself out  :-D

Excellent job on that Andrew,
I just finished the same kit a month or so ago. I didn't goof the painting but I DID glue the 2-3rd stage 180 degrees out of alignment to each other. I did mine with the Skylab kit so I was out the CM decals but they have just arrived.
Your Saturn looks fantastic !!
Thanks,

Did it reach orbit before it came crashing back down to earth?

I remember we launched and Airfix Viggen attached to a skyrocket but never did find it....................no surprise there really

Well, the real thing is exactly 363 feet tall - so, in 1/144 scale, that equates to 30.25 inches.
