*** Martin's Tiny Schwalbe - Finished ***
Re: Martin's Tiny Schwalbe
I find Xtracrylix is brilliant to brush with as long as you thin it to just above water consistency. It's like brushing Klear and it dries about as quickly. Only problem is, the lighter colours are quite translucent - but as you can easily brush 15 - 20 coats in a day (I did the 6 over the course of the working day today) you can get past this stage quickly enough.MerlinJones wrote:I was impressed by the 6 coats of paint!
The quite substantial upside is that brush marks are minimal and the paint doesn't obscure the rather finely executed surface detail.

Re: Martin's Tiny Schwalbe
Well, I did a couple of coats of RLM74 at work today (thin pointy brush). The contrast between the colours is unsurprisingly very stark. As I said, I'll see if I can filter coat the finish. Anyway, was looking forward to getting it home and doing some mottling tonight . . . but brilliantly left it at work instead.
Oh well, spent the early part of the evening decalling the Grand Slam Lanc (not 1/144th!)
More next week.

Martin

Re: Martin's Tiny Schwalbe
And after retrieving my tiny Schwalbe from work this afternoon, 15 minutes with a cut-down round headed brush and thinned xtracrylix has resulted in this:
Needs some touching up, but not too much, I'll try to get some decals on tonight, methinks.

Re: Martin's Tiny Schwalbe
Pretty much nailed that mottle, I think. I doesn't work as well at 1/72, but I believe it's more than good enough for 1/144.

Decals, klear, then a splash of satin varnish from a rattle can, and that's where we'll leave it for tonight:

Re: Martin's Tiny Schwalbe
Wow, again Martin, you have knocked my socks off with your brushed finishes. That looks 72nd not 144, mottle looks absolutely ace, bravo.

Re: Martin's Tiny Schwalbe
OK, I'm calling that complete although I may put another coat of matt varnish on, to dull down the canopy framing *** Edited with pics post matt varnish ***. I could have done more detailing, but I think that's enough for my first 144th build in donkeys' years.
Merlin,
Thanks for leading and for letting me take part.

Nicely done and a great example of how you can transfer modelling skills from one scale to a smaller one.

Re: Martin's Tiny Schwalbe
All,
Many thanks for your positive comments. I have enjoyed taking part and would like to try some more 144 kits in due course.
I wasn't happy with that canopy, so I masked with blu-tak and sprayed around the panels with matt varnish. It looks better now. I'll take a couple more photos tonight and replace the ones above.

Martin
