Northants Flyers
Re: Northants Flyers
Airfix A01071 Supermarine Spitfire Mk IIa P8041 built at Castle Bromwich and machine gun armed. Named NORTHAMPTON and bearing the County coat of arms, it was delivered to No 303 (Polish) Squadron (RF-E) at Northolt on 05-03-41 where it was used for operational patrols and forays over the Channel. It was not allocated to an individual pilot; consequently Pilot Officer Zumbach flew it at one time, as did Pilot Officer Daszewski, who claimed a kill on 20-04-41 when it shot down enemy aircraft during a high-altitude sweep over Le Touquet. It was later passed to 452 Squadron, the first Royal Australian Air Force where it was used for convoy patrols. But the plane was badly damaged when the pilot lost his way and with low-fuel was forced to emergency land in Essex before reaching an airfield and the Spitfire was eventually scrapped on May 20, 1942.

Designed in 1929 as the replacement for the aging Avro 504N, the Avro 621 was adopted as the standard RAF trainer in 1932 and given the official name Tutor. Its aerobatic abilities saw it being used by the Central Flying School aerobatic team, piloted by instructors as a display aircraft. The upper wing markings proved to the Hendon crowds that the aircraft was upside down for many minutes on end. She is depicted here as she was at Wittering in 1933.

In 1958 a new era started for Harrington when the Thor Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles were chosen as a nuclear deterrent. Bloodhound Mk.1 SAMs at separate sites provided protection. Construction at Harrington was completed in early 1960 and 218 Sqn took up residence. The allocation was short-lived as Harrington was de-activated 23 August 1963.
