Sorry, I can't help with the dome issue but you've certainly managed to turn the old dog into something that looks pretty good from here.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

That radome might've been black briefly, before fading to dark grey. It's that non-metallic material.
That said, on my Airfix one, it was the same colour as the fuselage, so what do I know?

Yup! - Black for the majority of them, from what I've seen.
I've seen plans from the Trumpeter and Bilek kits. No east Germans, but the Chinese, Polish, and Egyptian schemes call for black - funnily enough, the only one that isn't black, is the Russian metallic scheme, which calls for Light Blue :?:

edit:
'Wings Palette' has illustrations of some east German IL-28s
The metallic ones with radomes appear to have body-coloured domes.

Thanks for the advice guys - I am as confused as before!

In the absence of photographic evidence I am leaning towards light blue just for a splash of colour.

Last night I got he wheels on with no trouble - they just fit, it was bound to happen. :???:
I applied the decals which were quite thick but behaved ok although they are a different size to those shown in the instructions.

Tonight apply a wash as it looks factory fresh & I like grime on my jets. Still need to make a base too & fit the aerials etc.
I think I might make the deadline afterall. :-D

Just the U\C doors to go on & the aerial, lights etc but they will have to wait until tomorrow as I am out of superglue. The base is done and I have a Mig-15 standing on it to give you some idea of scale.

It is looking good, but I still think I'd recommend the Airfix.

You are not wrong there - only on my workbench. A Mig-15UTI in DDR markings is up next.

Here you go:

This one battled me all the way but I am very satisfied with the end result. I will not be doing another!

Here it is with a Mig-15 to give you some idea of it's size.

I will stick a couple of images in the gallery section too. :-D
