And we end a pleasant weekend's painting here. Note wings are in strict accordance with Airfix's painting guide (we won't mention the fuse, of course):

It feels pleasingly retro to be hand-painting splinter camouflage again after a considerable number of years. No masking, 3 coats of Xtracrylix, job's a good 'un in less than an hour; although wing colours are rather - em - garish, perhaps. Lots of weathering required there, then.

Now for masking up the fuse and mottle  .

Martin

Got the fuselage and mottle masked this evening with blu tak and tinfoil. Took about an hour. I need some more masking tape though to do the hard edges on the wings. Will try to get to the model shop tomorrow as I want to get some paint on this thing now.

So, tell me Mr Schwalbe, just how long have you been feeling off-colour?

Image

After another hour's masking (honestly guys, just use a cut down brush and stipple. It takes a lot less time) this is where we were. I've since blown a couple of thin coats of automotive paint on the bottom. I'll let that dry tonight, then try to finish off the sides in the morning before work. If I'm honest, the colour is not quite right. Forget RLM76, forget RLM65, this is nearer azure blue. However, are we downhearted? No. I have a plan . . . :)

. . . which might not work

Don't miss the next thrilling installment . . . . :???:

Well Jim, you be the judge. After a couple of coats of 'azure blue' on bottom and sides, it looked extremely blue. When I got home from work this afternoon, I sprayed thin coats of Mr Surfacer 1000 white primer all over the offending area. When dry, I unmasked it and this is what confronted me:

As an experiment, I would probably judge that a partial success. However, I can't see myself going through that rigmarole again. Time to buy an airbrush perhaps. Re the blue colour, bear in mind that this is significantly paler than when it started. However, it looks more like RLM65 now. I'll fade out the undersides further with thinned RLM76.

Tonight I just plan to touch up the top camouflage colours (got a bit of paint peel when the masking came off as you can see). I'll leave the colour change for another day.

Martin

Well that is a fine result for using aerosol cans and a can do attitude. Bravo Martin.
