Great effort Martin. Mottling is a difficult task as we all know and is not that easy with an airbrush either, but acquisition of the latter does make it easier with practice and IMHO is the only way to go if you want to do a lot of mottled schemes.

Thanks, one and all.

As stated previously, it was an experiment and it sort of worked. To be frank, though, I'm not too enamoured by the 'heavy' mottle or the colour of the light blue. Taken as an experiment, and given its intended purpose, I can live with it (although I have another FROG Schwalbe on order!). As Shaun states, an airbrush is probably the way to go in the longer term.

I have attempted to de-emphasise the mottle a bit by brush overpainting with thinned RLM76 and - again - this has 'sort of' worked. I have also gone round the edges of some of the mottles with my stipple brush which has - yes - negated the whole process. Hey ho.

Anyway, I have tidied up the painting and put a couple of coats of Klear on. Decalling and - hopefully - matt varnishing tomorrow, followed by the final bits n bobs over the weekend. Going away with work on Monday, but still confident of finishing.

regards,

Martin

Well, decaling and matt varnishing complete. Kit decals used apart from the '11's. Very impressed that they worked after 40 years, although the colour density is nothing special.

Now I have to make up the pilot's head armour, paint the cockpit framing and add the canopy, then some weathering and the last bits n' bobs, and she'll be done.

I still say that's it's a great effort Martin although I can sense from your earlier reply that you're not 100% with regard to the mottling. Don't be too hard on yourself, it's the feathering of the paint that is so needed for successful mottling that I think is nigh on impossible with a paint brush and IMHO sponges don't cut the mustard either. I'll probably get lambasted by all the hairy stick enthusiasts, but I remain of the view that an airbrush is the only way that the majority of modellers can achieve anything like a "proper" mottled finish. Quite often I end up with a blobby mess and take five attempts to get anything like - it takes a lot of practice with paint mixing and air pressure. Anyone who manages consistency with mottling is a modelling God in my book

Shaun,

I appreciate your encouragement. Here is the latest state of play:

Image

Weathering tomorrow, which should hopefully tone down the current 'toy-like' look a bit at least. Want to do some airflow streaking back across the wings. I may use post-its to get separate streaking over the control surfaces and behind where the leading edge slats should be. We'll see. Also, some gun staining and general cr*p on the undersides behind the wheel wells.

Oh, and a Pitot tube, of course!

Apart from that, it's done. Where's the stand? Well, I said I'd get the model complete in time, didn't I . . . ?

Martin

Looking nice, that canopy is really clear. I get the feeling you've really enjoyed this build Martin.

OK, posted after the end date, but done before - last Sunday night to be honest. I've been on travel until today. Here is the retro FROG Schwalbe weathered a la Martin R:

Thanks, Jim.

I'll see if I can find a rough piece of wood to mount it on as an interim measure.
