It's an old Fagot***Finished***
Airfix 1/72 Mig-15
I will be building this OOB as I need a nice, easy quickie to get my modeling mojo back. I also want to do the newer release OOB as a comparison of how things have moved on in modelling terms (Hopefully)
The instruction are concise
I will be doing the Russian silver version, the decals for which are currently on the windowsill awaiting the sun:

Good luck with that.Molly-new wrote:I will be doing the Russian silver version, the decals for which are currently on the windowsill awaiting the sun:
A great old kit & you have to go with the classic silver & red stars.

Re: It's an old Fagot
Made a start by cleaning up the parts that were already off the sprue, kleared the canopy, and painted some of the smaller bits. For the inside detail I have gone for sky blue. This will get a green wash once dry.
I am a bit concerned about the molding of the pilot:
Excited about his first flight maybee?

Re: It's an old Fagot
That was one of the first kits I built back in the early 60's, if I recall you can see right through from the intake to the tail. Do you get a seat for the excited pilot or does he just sit on two pegs?

TYPICAL!!
There you are late to the party and actually have done some work on the kit too!!
Unlike me goodself what has still to start!!
Nice start...I need to use this as an inspiration for myself to kick my own behind and get my own build up and running!

Re: It's an old Fagot
Nowt wrong with the memory Splash, and due to this I have had to amend my intended OOB build. The pilot gets a seat to fit on two pegs, and that is it cockpit wise. I may as well go the whole "scratchbuild" hog now.splash wrote:If I recall you can see right through from the intake to the tail. No Problems, having done other GB's I know how easy it is to fall behind (or to the bottom of the page ), and end up rushing it, so now I like to get out of the blocks ASAP. Re: It's an old Fagot
I have now added a green wash to the relevant areas, and painted up the now much calmer pilot:
The first part of sorting out the see through problem is by using a cut down ink cartridge at the exhaust end:
The front needs some work too, due to misaligned moldings,
Chunky flanges,
producing an unsightly end result.
I am fairly sure that I can improve on this.

Re: It's an old Fagot
You can see why Airfix re-moulded this kit. I like the way you fixed the exhaust with the ink cartridge, that is a neat solution to a common problem.
The intake will not be so simple to fix.

Re: It's an old Fagot
Yes the ink cartridge is a very neat solution. The front is going to need a bit of effort sanding and fettling. That's why we love these oldies though eh? That's what I keep telling myself but my next 1/72nd MiG 15 is more than likely going to be Airfix's new effort!
Best of luck with this one and hopefully you can get a good result with no more kickings to the mojo

Re: It's an old Fagot
Chip...I'm thinking of a broad strip of plasticard, folded in half-ish, with the corner of the fold manipulated to repesent that intake splitter and each half of the strip forming intake trunking...a bit like the part on the new kit, without the solid centre.
Those chunky edges just need sanding away.

Bruce

Re: It's an old Fagot
Thanks for the support guys. I have made some progress on the front by adapting a PVA glue bottle top ( which was quite a good fit to start with) into the hole to blank it off.
Edited: Picture added.
Thankfully I have not fitted the splitter part yet as I am going to do as Bruce suggests and add a bit of card to make it look more like the real thing. Cheers pal.
Since I have started scratching I may as well do something with the cockpit. This is what Airfix produce, with a seat and pilot to be added:
On with the thinking cap again

Re: It's an old Fagot
My God, what a cockpit, those were the days! Add a placcy card instrument panel, the seat and the pilot and with the kit transparency being 20 feet thick anyway I bet little else can be seen. Don't worry, I won't tell any one if that's what you do - mum's the word
Otherwise, I'd have a look at Brickie's build of the new kit, which features some shots of the interior, make a simple cockpit tub, use some old instrument decals for the side panels and instrument panel and hey presto. Sounds easy but may well be a proper pain, particularly if you've joined the fuselage halves, in which case revert back to option one above.

Re: It's an old Fagot
Ere Shaun, you looking over my shoulder?
Unfortunately I had already joined the fuselage halves, but as you suggest I have made a rear bulkhead for behind the seat, and an ip out of thin plastic sheet, and used a spare decal for the instruments. The side panels are made up of a bit of sprue with instruments painted on. (Not accurate but that's between you and me, mum )
ip to be fitted once dry.
I have also been working on the splitter:
Quite promising so far, I will have to see how it looks with a bit of paint on. It is amazing what you can do with a bit of bent sprue and some plastic sheet.
