Splash's Meatbox ***finished***

Post by splash »

Hi All

Sorry for the late start, I had planned to build a PM Yak but on opening the box I thought not enough time to fix all the errors, so I have got the Revell Meteor F4 to build instead.

At one stage I thought about doing the Royal Naval Sea Meteor, the one that did the carrier flight trials on HMS Illustrious, but on opening the box I realised the F4 had the clipped wings and the Naval Sea Meteor was based on the F3 with the long wing tips, so this will be an OOB build.

The kit is new to Revell but is not a new kit and suffers slight flash on a very few parts, but overall looks like a nice kit, with some fine surface detail, as you can see from the photos below a dry run with the cockpit show basic but adequate cockpit detail that should look OK with the canopy closed.

Quick question the instructions say Black for the cockpit interior but would it have been green?

Black is the colour. I've been doing mine a very dark grey, dry-brushed with graphite or silver paint.

Thanks Bruce, it must have been just about the time they changed, I don't recall seeing a Meteor cockpit in Green, but the Sea Vampire at Yeovilton has a green cockpit and is just about the same age.

Some progress on the meat box, although this is a new kit to Revell it's not state of the art or a shake and bake kit, I'm enjoying the build and will probably build another but this is not a kit for a beginner, it's more like a detailed limited run kit. There are only a few locating pins and they are very small so I have removed them to make alignment easier.

The wheel wells are separate mouldings and are attached to the top wing section, this seems a strange way to do it, the logical way would be to join them to the bottom wing section so as to get a good join and the outer wing panels are only but joined and might be difficult to align if you are a beginner. Apart from these points the build is simple.

As you can see from the images there is some good detail, in particular the front of the engine and the wheels and with a simple oil wash the detail stands out.

Due to my new job, my bench time is more restricted than before, so my updates will be further apart, but I will try had to finish this kit on time, to make life easier I will paint it in a high speed silver finish.

Quick update before I let the glue set for 48 hours.

With lots of dry fitting and a bit of rubbing back here and there the wings have fitted with little fuss and little need for filler.

First coat of silver added, just a couple of joints will need sorting, nothing so far to worry about.

It's a nice kit, that is not showing its age.

I'm enjoying the build, the decals are going on without a hitch and the fine panel lines should look good after an oil wash.

I don't know about everyone else out there, but the decal stage of the build is not my favourite, but this time it was a pleasant surprise, the Revell decals were a pleasure to use, they were thin but not fragile, the registration was good and they worked well with micro set and sol, once dry there was no sign of the carrier film and all the fine detail underneath showed through as if they had been sprayed on.

That is looking nice.

The decal scheme you've chosen is almost the one FROG used for their original F8, way back in The Olden Days;

I use Tamiya Flat Aluminum XF-16, it sprays great with good coverage.

I'm on short finals now and should be finished before the GB closes, it's had a wash to bring out the panel lines and all I have to do is fit the undercarriage and add some arials.

It might be a tight finish as I'm away this weekend and might not get any bench time tomorrow.
