Mk31 PBR "the Pibber"

Post by jssel »

My subject will be the Tamiya 1/35 PBR. The Ol' Pibber.

Lots of extras in this kit like water dispensers, fuel drums etc. I may add C-Rats boxes from my AFV stash. Ready for a trip up the creek.

Certainly looks like a straight up build.

Good one! One of our club members, who was a Marine "River Rat" in Iraq, built one; I forget the mods he made but I think a textured non-skid deck was one. There's some pix here, click each to get full size.

Another feature that I remember from an "unscheduled" ride on one was that the mesh of the fiberglass material shows through in a few places. Mostly the gunwales areas.

Should be an interesting build. Lots of scope for weathering and adding bits to. Must be quite a size in 1:35.

I am really looking forward to this. I nearly bought one from a car boot sale but let it go. I have been kicking myself ever since.

Step 1 is the hull work. A nice thing to do here is build the display stand as it give you something to set the piece on.

There are eight parts to attach at this point. six ?scuppers? and a couple of vents for the prot and starboard sides. A pair of thrusters on the stern and you are pretty well set on this part. I see lots of pre-painting on the horizon.

In reviewing photos of the PBR MkII there is evidence of an anti-skid coating on all or various parts of the decking. Not all boats have it and not all boats show the same pattern. I had to try to simulate it.

First, liquid cement was applied to small areas at one time with a stipling brush. While the paint is wet and the plastic softened, very fine sand is sprinkled on. In this case I used Woodland Scenics very fine railroad ballast. The end result looks like this:

When dry, I applied a green primer coat to see the results. It is a little "heavy handed" but additional painting will knock it down a little more.

So overall, here is where she stands. And remember: "Charley don't surf."

Looking very nice Jeff. Great job with the anti-slip surface.

I have always wanted one of these but never got my hands on one. I think a Brown Water Navy GB would be fun.

That sand technique looks like it would do very well for surface rust, when painted appropriately. Maybe a diaorama involving a submarine and a sea-bead wreck ?
I like sanding.
