A tribute to XX411
A tribute to XX411
My entry into the fray will be the Fujimi 1/48 Gazelle done as XX411 of 3CBAS. The Scouts did not warrant the media coverage (for obvious reasons) that the Harrier, A-4, Vulcan and Victor's had but played a very important role in the conflict.
The story found here.

Fujimi made two versions that I know of for the Gazelle in 1/48. However, the kit was released at different times with different markings. This version included parts for the AH version.
Box art:
Innards:
Instructions and decals:
To make a true Gazelle for 3CBAS we will need to scratch make a heat deflection shroud and source out the SNEB 68 pods. I may cheat on the pods and have the cones with protective covers as in transit.
Overall, it looks to be a great build but like all helicopters, the glass is everything.

I have that kit also, Paul. I fancied doing a "Shark" with it.

Great choice of a rare kit, I've not seen one built. Does the kit supply a roof part without the sight for the HOT missiles?

Welcome aboard the GB Jeff. Love the choice of kit.
I wonder if I can sneak one into the stash

The kit features both tops. The 3CBAS had smooth tops. The sight was based on the Mark 1 eyeball and grease pencil with a post mounted on the antenna array on the nose. Clear as mud, right? Pictures are in the above link.

Looks an interesting kit Jeff, never seen one before so will be nice to follow your build.
BEEN A WHILE
Re: A tribute to XX411
In looking over the kit the decision was made to tackle the hardest part first. I had to make the shroud for the exhaust.
This picture shows the gathered tools. Missing is of course a razor saw.
There is a tea light for the heat source, scalpel, strips of tape, tubing from Evergreen and a measuring device. I don't know why there is a measuring device.
The technique is identical to stretching sprue but a bit slower. The reason is the heat source will cause ripples in the tubing before it is completely ready for bending so you have to keep the piece rolling between your fingers. Of course if a metallic medium would have been used, the neighbors "pipe bender" would have been implemented.
Note that the tube diameter matched the engine/exhaust shroud.
After two attempts, bingo there was a good bend. The end was now beveled with a razor saw.
This is scary. A test dry fit shows everything basically matches.
Based on Gregers photos, here is still one more smaller diameter piece that goes inside. An extension of the tailpipe no doubt.
Thanks for looking everyone.

Bending and stretching plastic over naked flames? a man after my own heart Great result as well, careful you don't get burnt or set fire to the workbench - yes I've been there!
