RNAS Rolls Royce Armoured Car -- continued
I started this in the One Thing to Another conversion GB but of course, did not finish it, so I am going to finish it here as the CBK SIG needs it for the SMW display this year.
The short story is that this is a conversion of the Airfix 1/32 1911 Rolls Royce into the subject vehicle.
The long story is that I used less than a dozen parts from the kit and the majority is scratchbuilt based on an article in the Airfix Modelling Guide 21.
When the GB ended, I had most of the body built, the turret started, and was just addressing the wire wheels - the last couple-three pages of the original thread should get you up to speed on all that.
Here is a close-up of the wheel jig -- it will allow me to built the spokes on one side, put in a spacer, turn it over and build the spokes on the other side. The kit axles must be modified, which I have started but not shown ...
I don't think the 6 spoked wheels will go quickly so I better get back to the turret and rear compartment ...

This is good stuff John. Those wire wheels look like the sort of fiddly nightmare that I often get myself into but the work will be worth it in the end as they will give a great scale appearance.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Funny you should say post that now - I just got my first opportunity back at the bench in several weeks and managed to bash the cargo bed up ...Cherrytree270 wrote:Can't wait to see the next picture post :D
Next will be that tailgate and the storage boxes. I must remember to not add the tailgate until way later as I need to slide in the wood floor.
I need to get back on the turret.
I need to think about the front fenders.
Then I need to think about the running boards, etc.
Then I really need to get over my wire-wheel block ....
I do hope I am able to build and post regularly ...

This is amazing to watch. Those etch wheel spokes would have given me the screaming heebie-jeebies just thinking about them. Bravo!

Today, I started the front fenders. If you look back, maybe into the GB, you'll remember I cut the running boards, fenders, etc, from the frame -- well now time for the fenders to return. I trimmed them up, sanded and shaped.
I used some brass rod as supports - they are curing well before I trim them to proper length and then stick the fenders to them.
Once happy with that, I'll work on the running boards and supports ...

So, I cut down the rods, clean up the fenders, measure everything out and mark it, then glue some small channel stock on the underside of the fenders where the brass rods will attach.
A bit of fitting & wiggling, some CA ....
What makes this fun is doing it in small chunks and keeping it all simple ....
Now on to the running boards ... still avoiding the wire wheels, turret, etc ...

What timing, I have just completed a step -- the running boards.
There are several hangers I must fabricate and install to complete this - that is next.
