I have never built one of these tanks before and as you will see I have brought the Eduard photo etch set as well to add a bit of detail.

Well I am off and running. First job was to clean up the upper and lower hull parts which didn't take too long then I filled the holes in the lower hull. I also started to remove the plastic detail off the upper hull ready for the photo etch.

Image

To do this I just used a needle file for the moulded detail, a razor saw for the storage box and a knife for the plastic grills.

Image

I also used a dremel to thin down the mud guards.

Image

As this is an old kit I decided to fill in the gaps in the mud guards underneath where the moulded box detail. To do this I used scrap bits of plastic and plastic sheet.

Image

Image

I filled any small holes as well with homemade filler and I added plastic sheet where the grills are going to be to make the hull light tight. While I was waiting for the glue and filler to cure I assembled the wheels.

Image

Image

When I was happy I started to assemble the hull as per the Tamiya instructions which was straight forward.

Image

Image

Image

The turret went together next without any problems.

Image

Now for a bit of photo etch and a tiny bit of scratch building. I attached the photo etch for the mud guards and grids with CA glue and then I bent the photo etch for the exhaust muffler and used CA glue to attach that. When I had a look at the kit part for the exhaust pipe I though I would have a go and see if I could make a better pipe myself. All I used was a piece of copper wire which was roughly the same thickness as the kit part. I clamped the copper wire in a vice then I flat the end with a file. I marked the centre with a metal scriber and then I slowly drilled out the centre.

Image

Image

The problem I had with my first attempt was that when I tried to bend the pre-drilled copper to the required shape the copper sides of the now copper pipe would start to collapse. So take two. This time I bend the copper first then I drilled it and that worked a lat better.

Image

Image

All I had to do was then cut it to size and fit it. To make the exhaust from copper wire was really easy to do. I only had two attempts and I found the copper easier to drill than plastic. If you have a go and you will see what I mean. Anyway here is the pipe attached.

Image

Image

Next was a bit more photo etch to do. This time on a box.

Image

I removed the detail.

Image

I then started on the frame and here are the tools I used.

Image

Image

Then just checking the fit.

Image

Image

Then I added the handles and a few other things.

Image

Image

Then on the hull it went.

I'm a big fan of classic 1/35th Tamiya military vehicle kits and with patience/TLC great models can be produced from them. You are off to a great start Ian and the Eduard set is really adding to the build, top stuff.

Thanks guys. I had a rest from the photo etch and I had a play with the wheels. First I tidied them up.

Image

Then using my dremel I sanded the edges and with them a nice and round I used my razor saw on them to add a bit of damage to the wheels.

Image

Image

All I did was to put random cuts into the wheel then I lightly sanded them and finally I gave the affected areas a tiny coat of Tamiya Extra Thin glue to remove any sharp edges.

Image

Now back to the photo etch. Eduard instructions being easy to follow I proceeded to work on the jack and the sledge hammer.

Image

First I cleaned up the parts as per the instructions.

Image

Image

Then I started on the photo etch.

Image

Image

Image

I used CA glue to attach the photo etch and plastic parts.

Image

Image

After this I added one or two more bits.

Image

Image

Image

While building this kit I can understand why it is still in production, its just loving building this. Anyway I have been busy doing the photo etch and I am really enjoying do this as well.

Image

As you can see that I have left out a few tools out of their holder just because I have saw missing tools in photo's but I am going to add the shovel to a different part of the tank. As if the shovel has been used but they didn't have time to put it back in its holder. I looked at the kit part and I thought I would try something different. You get a flat shovel head in the photo etch set so I used that and using the kit part as a template I cut a piece of brass rod to size for the shaft. First I added a bend in the shovel head. Then I thought about using CA glue to join the parts but I decided to solder them together instead. Using a piece of MDF with right angles and straight lines drawn on I temporary stuck the shovel parts in place.

Image

Then I just soldered them together.

Image

Image

Image

Then on with the rest.

Image

Image

Image

The turret was straightforward like the rest of this kit and I drilled out the two gun barrels.

Image

Image

Image

Image

As per the Eduard photo etch instructions I removed what I think is the main gun barrel cleaning rod detail from one of the boxes and now its time to put it back. The Eduard instructions tell you to use plastic rod but I decided to use copper wire instead. First I cut and straightened the copper wire.

Image

Then I added the photo etch clamps to the box lid.

Image

Then I just added the copper wire and then the handles for the photo etch clamps.

Image

Image

Image

I also added the jerry can holder.

Image

Image

Thats all the photo etch on.

This is turning into a masterclass on how to super-detail an old Tamiya P-II with etch and great Old Skool skills Ian. And that shovel is something else! Brilliant stuff.

That's a great looking little tank kit, and your extra work is excellent. What scheme will it be finished in?

Superb build so far. This PE set just brought it to 21st century.

Thanks everyone and on with the paint. I primed the tank parts and left it over night to dry completely.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then I did a touch of pre-shading to add a bit of shadow and on with the base coat which was Tamiya Dark Yellow XF60. With that done and a small amount of paint left in the paint cup of my airbrush I added a drop of white XF1 and a bit of thinner then mixed it all. This with then sprayed on the upper facing surfaces mainly in the centre of panels to hopefully show sun bleaching of the paint (yet another handy tip picked up from Phil Flory and his team). I then painted the wheel rims by hand which didn't take too long and with that done I gave it all a coat of Klear to seal it all.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now on with the decals.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then another coat of Klear to seal the decals.

I can but agree with Splash, Ian. This is a masterclass in how to get the very best from one of these classic Tamiya kits and is very inspirational. I've got one or two wingy things on my bench but then it's going to be time for a tank!

Thanks chaps for all the kind comments and support. At the minute I am doing a touch of chipping and weathering of my poorly looked after tank. The look I am going for is a vehicle that has gone through the whole of the campaign from start to finish hence the badly chipped paint work, dents, battered wheels and with a bit of rust and dirt when I get round to it.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The jerry can is from my spares box.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The helmet is from the kit and was hollowed out so it would sit properly on the hull.
