Tamiya 1:35 SU-122
Good day, all!
This is Tamiya's 1:35 SU-122, an older kit with some of the foibles that come with the territory: one-piece tracks, open sponsons, polycap hubs, and a design which was once meant for motorization. Still, it was inexpensive, has excellent fit, is quick and easy to assemble and finish, and it builds up into a nice likeness of this interesting, purposeful-looking subject. Really enjoyed this one!
This was built OOB except for the chain, the radio antenna, and a plastic rhinestone for the headlight. The kit includes a commander figure which I didn't use because I'm still too chicken to try painting figures. One of these days!
In case anyone here intends to get this kit, I'd like to point out a mistake I made. Tamiya gives you brackets for the external fuel tanks, so I glued them in place, but when it came time to instal the tanks themselves, I found they already had the brackets moulded integrally. I think Tamiya's intention was that modellers could just use the tanks as they are, but if they wanted to display the kit with a tank removed, then they could use the empty bracket. I foolishly did both, which is why the tanks look a bit blast-eyed. Oh well!
All the best for the weekend!

Wow what fantastic weathering.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Magnificent!!! The worn and rusting corners are superbly done!
Best wishes

Looks like it's carved out of a chunk of solid iron. Brilliant weathering.

Great work! It looks like the machine directly from the center of war.

Re: Tamiya 1:35 SU-122
I'm a big fan of classic Tamiya armour, Canuck and with a bit of work it can stand up with more modern stuff including Tamiya's own modern mouldings. You have done a masterful job and this really does look excellent, I've said it before but I'll say it again - you really do know how to make a great looking tank! I've never built this kit but with the rear fuel tanks, I think you might be correct in your assumption. On the full-size, this type of bracket was made up of a solid steel lower cradle into which the fuel tank sat and then two straps which secured the tank in place. When fuel tanks weren't fitted the cradle was usually left in place with the straps still attached and a scan of the interweb will usually throw up some shots of T-34's and SU's (which were based on the T-34 chassis and used the same type of fitment for their external fuel tanks) with missing fuel tanks so you can see what I mean.

Great weathering Fred. I must say that your paint job really makes it feel like it is a big chunk of metal (hopefully this comment comes across in a good way). It just looks heavy! When I get down your way I will have to watch you do some weathering work as I have so much to learn.
