1:35 Hobby Boss T24 Medium Tank
Good day all!
This is Hobby Boss's 1:35 Russian T24 medium tank. It's kind of an obscure subject, but I like its boxy shape and heavy rivets, and I thought it would be a good subject for some weathering. In reality this was an inter-war design so I don't think they saw any action and were probably kept in pretty good condition, but I think we can be forgiven for using our imaginations a little!

I saw this Krylon paint in a craft store while my wife was buying yarn (so nice to have compatible hobbies!). The colour is called "Cocoa Bean", and although it looks black in the photo, it's actually dark brown like very dark chocolate. It also has a nice satin finish, and I thought it would make a good undercoat for weathered armour.

Here's the hull and turrets built up and coated with the "cocoa bean" Krylon paint. Frustratingly, the upper hull is made up of a large number of flat panels which all have to be held in place and glued along their edges. The good news is that they fit together very well, and the whole thing is quite solid once it's together.
If it looks shiny, it's because of a layer of hairspray for the chipping to come.

Here it is with a top coat of Tamiya Flat Green. This shade looks very bright, but since the model would later be washed with brown artist's oils, I thought the final result would look more olive-coloured. Also, the Russians generally favoured a pretty bright green for their vehicles.
The shading looks overstated here, but I hoped it would be less noticeable once the chipping and other weathering were complete.

Re: 1:35 Hobby Boss T24 Medium Tank
The rest of the photos show the model after a layer of Testor's GlossCote, kit decals (these settled down nicely with some Solvaset, but proved very difficult to move once they were in place. If you build this model, try to get the position of the decals right the first time! ), a layer of Testor's Dullcote, and a dot filter of different shades of brown artist's oils. A very dark brown pin wash was added to the recesses. Small chips were simulated by dampening the surface with thinner, then flicking on a rust-coloured artist's oil paint with a short-bristled brush. The lower hull was dusted with sand-coloured pigment, and some spots were touched up with rust-coloured pigments. Finally, raised areas like grab-handles were rubbed with graphite from a soft pencil to simulate the look of worn metal.
I plan to add some dust and mud to the lower hull, then it's just a matter of attaching the running gear, fenders, and maybe some stowage!
Again, this amount of weathering is probably not realistic for this subject, but I certainly enjoyed doing it!

Your Russian green looks absolutely spot on. Some exceptional weathering as well.

Really nice weathering effects. I'm taking notes here

The green came out quite well. Thanks for the explanation of your methods.

Re: 1:35 Hobby Boss T24 Medium Tank
Thanks all for your kind comments! I'm very glad if this is useful!
Here's the T24 in its finished state with the running gear, tracks and fenders. This kit has individual link tracks, and I still have a lot to learn about building these. The left one turned out OK, but I botched the right one. BTW, if anybody else is interested in building this kit, the instructions say to use 68 links per side, but I found this was a bit short. I'd recommend 69, or a couple more if you want a lot of sag in the upper run. The kit provides a few extras.
Aside from that, I just added some weathering with dust-coloured pigments, and some rusty patches using "Sophisticated Finishes" two-part rust effect. This is most apparent on the muffler.
Cheers!
